I think Espoir de Romay, whilst a nice horse, is overrated. He gained his hurdle rating beating a Hobbs horse called Earth Moor (no, me neither) then carried that forward to beat an (admittedly race fit) Senior Citizen getting a chunk of weight from the latter, got beaten in a 4 runner affair in a bog by Royale Pagaille who got hyped a lot subsequently, won a moderate 5 runner handicap in another bog at the mecca of NH racing that is Leicester, then fell over 2 out at Aintree against a field which had exerted themselves at Cheltenham. And suddenly he’s amazeballs. Not for me.

I’m going with Fiddlerontheroof in the hope that the Tizzards didn’t totally disintegrate his lungs by running him and running him and running him likely full of virus last season. I’ve also done a SF with Silver Hallmark who I really like the look of though he may prefer a bigger galloping track and a bit further. Might bet the pair for the Ladbrokes trophy as well.

Ahoy Senor seems to be all the go but I think he was flattered by his Aintree run and needs further than today. Pay the Piper won’t disgrace himself.

I saw Espoir De Romay in the flesh a couple of seasons ago when he was a novice hurdler at Newcastle. He’s a big brute of a horse and one which was clearly going to thrive as a chaser. His improvement last season was no surprise to me.

That said, his rating of 160 is too high for what he has beaten. He didn’t have the race won at Aintree when he came down and there are question marks about his stamina in testing conditions. I still think he’ll win today though as he’s the best horse in the race and well treated by the race conditions. If Ahoy Senor turns out to be very, very good he is the danger.

I would pick Espoir for this if I had to as well.

Fiddler needs 3m+ not 2m4f, this is a prep run for the ladbrokes trophy im guessing and they won’t want him to win

No bet for me but id be surprised if espoir de romay didn’t win

    Nice GAG!
Ahoy Senor put in a lovely round of jumping until the unseat, was beat but a good first run I thought

Presumably the reason Ahoy Senor ran in this race is simply lack of suitable races in the North in the coming weeks. In November there are just 3 novice chases in the North for which Ahoy Senor would be eligible, 17/11 at Hexham, 19/11 at Catterick and 28/11 at Carlisle. He’s not eligible for any novice handicaps as far as I can see as he’s rated 152.

Thanks all. That won’t have damaged his mark too much. Pleased enough with Silver Hallmark’s run too.

Russell has been quite vocal in saying senor is the best horse she,s ever had , she reckons he,s a GC horse in the making , I followed the fiddlerontheroof money and I put him up for the Ladbroke a bit back , I can see him running a big run if there

Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026

Read the race perfectly today GAG, well done.

Silver Hallmark was an eye catcher with the Ladbroke/Hennessy in mind. Will get a handy swing with FOTR and today’s track and trip were never likely to suit even without the penalty.

Espoir De Romay pretty much proved what we suspected, he much prefers quicker ground. Most of Bailey’s have needed the run mind.

One thing that has disappeared under the radar is that the small stable of Ann Hamilton clearly has another very decent animal in Pay The Piper who ran a close second. Yet to finish out of the first two in seven efforts under Rules and could well be up there with current stable star Nuts Well.

The third best in the stable, Tommy’s Oscar (OR 139), was hardly disgraced in the following handicap hurdle either.
