This a race I’ve seen Glenn pass a brief comment on and am interesting in what the views of this race are from others.

There are a few things about this that I’m not completely happy about. I’d be interested to know why Ahern took Cloud Illusions as wide as he did, and why he didn’t go for the whip until 1/2f out. What I am most uncomfortable with is the fact that the answers to these questions will remain a mystery is because the stewards failed to hold an enquiry into the race.
Also worth noting that Bassett Road was sent off a strong odds on favourite despite having 25 lb to find with Cloud Illusions on adjusted RPRs and 26 lb to find on Timeform ratings. I’m not for one minute suggests either firms rating was a definite case of established ability with Bassett Road as he’d started an unconsidered 25/1 in a course maiden on his only previous start.
December 18, 2010 at 18:52 #333149Upon looking at that, it did seem a strange ride from Ahern.
I personally think he had thought that he had the beating of Bassett Road, who was being shoved along and had been tapped with the whip a few times.
I then think he got into a bit of a ‘panic’ when he realised that maybe his mount didn’t have the reserves that he initially thought, and therefore started to administer the whip.
Not the best ride from Ahern, i simply think he thought he had the beating of Bassett Road without asking his mount, and then when Bassett Road started to get ahead, his mount found nothing when asked/wasn’t given enough time to pick up.
December 18, 2010 at 20:06 #333155I didn’t see a lot wrong to be honest. I watched the race before reading David’s comments and thought she’d win everwhere bar the line. Might have been a little overconfident but the horse surely found less than expected as well. Were I a steward on the day I wouldn’t have had a burning urge to call an enquiry. I can tell you what he’d have said: "I was getting there easy sorr, but when I went for her there wasn’t much there".
To answer the point about going wide- if you look again Ahern is dead in the middle of a track made by the tractor going around- he might have felt the ground in this was a bit more compacted and hence possibly faster- the winner is in another similar track on his inner.December 18, 2010 at 20:19 #333157I wouldn’t swear there was anything wrong with it DJ – but I thought it an odd ride when reviewing the race yesterday on TFR. You don’t think the proximity of Christmas is a factor?
December 18, 2010 at 20:40 #333162One for the notebook, but no great shakes on breeding on the dam side,
When can we have an alert facility like on GG Racing? just an
December 18, 2010 at 21:13 #333166There"s a smell about this race, its not pleasant but it doesn"t reek. What it clearly shows is the skill of Eddie ahern as a jockey, that will go straight over the head of some but still!

Cloud illusion
should have been fav imo,his run in a listed race against Zoowraa puts him way ahead of Bassett road and his breeding screams dirt will suit,i think he would beat the winner next time out even off levels! Obviously the right horse on the day won but then again he was ridden too!
December 18, 2010 at 21:29 #333167It will be interesting to see what the second finds off the bridle next time. In her defence it was her first run in about 7 weeks and it’s not inconcievable she could have been a gallop short given recent conditions. The TS figure of 42 makes that Listed race form a bit suspect IMO.
December 18, 2010 at 21:46 #333172One for the notebook, but no great shakes on breeding on the dam side,
Correction the dam was placed in a Group1, but I can’t back filly at this time of year.

Talk about iffy rides fellas,
TRANS SONIC
ridden by Shane B Kelly today at Southwell.
Woke up this morning and went down to Totesport and took £50 ew at 7/1 and went back to bed, wake up to watch the race and find out it’s 25/1 with the jockey sittin motionless throughout.
Lucky to place.

Thought he kept the horse wide to avoid the kickback, which can be evil at Wolves following a frost, and it would have taken a particular artistry to get a horse beaten so narrowly given how wide they were apart, but can’t argue that the market wasn’t a much better guide than the form book.
December 19, 2010 at 01:07 #333186Just to be clear, I’m not suggesting Ahern stopped the horse. I certainly can’t produce any evidence to suggest that is the case. My main problem really lies with the lack of a stewards enquiry in a race which has seen an unorthodox ride. For all I know, Ahern was told to keep his mount out of the kickback because she’s shown she resents it and he was asked not to use the whip because she won’t respond to it. The problem is we have to speculate because questions weren’t asked when they should have been.
It’s rather like a repeat of the Get Me Out of Here Ascot race I think where any issues could have been put to bed quickly had the stewards been a little more proactive.
December 19, 2010 at 08:19 #333194Looks like he went wide to get on a faster, tyre compacted strip of ground. Add in a bit of overconfidence and the horse finding very little and you’d have to say you’d see worse, imo.
December 19, 2010 at 09:20 #333199If you’ve ever heard Eddie Ahern speak you’ll realise he’s not the brightest. After all, this is the jockey who deliberately committed a whip offence so he could go on holiday. It was just an ill-judged ride, IMO.
December 19, 2010 at 11:27 #333215Ahern is a very good jockey whom I like on any horse with money down.
Ridiculous to think any wrong doings here Imho.
EA thought he could pick up the race at any time, all jockeys would take a lone path with the frozen lumps at WolvesDecember 19, 2010 at 12:24 #333219

Hard to say what Eddie Ahern was thinking without knowing the horse.
It could be he wanted to come up the middle of the track if it rides better or he simply wanted to keep her as far wide of the others as possible.
I did notice she stopped very quickly when eyballed 2 runs back so she may not be thoroughly genuine.
He certainly wasn’t getting really stuck into her but again it may well be she would resents that. If that was the reason it would be very easy to mistake that for a jockey in no hurry to get home.
What’s made it look slightly suspicious IMO is the 2nd was under pressure first but that is typical of a lot of horses having only their 2nd run.
He took a long time to get a hang of what’s required but run on really well for his rider when the penny eventually dropped. I notice he’s been gelded but again I have no idea for the reason behind that.
I suppose we’ll know a bit more when the run again but at a guess I’d say the winner will prove to be a far better horse than her at the end of the day.
I’d be very tempted to give her a temporary squiggle in my notebook.
Eddie rode her like he was confident she would win and she didn’t come up with the goods. Had there been an enquiry I’m pretty sure he would have walked away name untarnished.
December 19, 2010 at 18:16 #333243Fergal B Lynch is riding Sea the Stars against a listed class performer, a moderate handicapper and a selling plater.
Sea the Stars starts roughly halfway between the listed horse and the handicapper in the betting.
I don’t know who’s gonna win this race, but there’s three things I know for sure:
1) No matter what Fergal B Lynch does, there will still be plenty who think the ride is fine.
2) Anyone who backed Sea the Stars at odds against will be retrospectively laughed at for backing a ‘bridal ponce’.
3) Scotney’s boys will be too busy eating to rise from their slumbers.December 30, 2010 at 22:40 #334352Cloud Illusions is declared in the 12.00 at Lingfield tomorrow. Eddie Ahern again takes the ride.
