I was impressed by Binocular when I saw him win his first race. What did he beat? an unfit Crack Away Jack ye I said then we had just seen this seasons Champion Hurdle winner.
I remember the cries of "Rubbish"
I saw Sizing Europe win a novice in Ireland and said then he was a Champion Hurdle horse.
What he and Binocular beat is irrelevent it’s the way they did it.
Hope that explains it
November 5, 2008 at 02:30 #188050Not really, but seeing as you are never wrong on even the slightest point i’m leaving it.

I know your ego has become somewhat of a trademark now Fists, but you really have to tone down the know-all attitude you weave into every post.
November 5, 2008 at 03:33 #188062Fist, This years Champion hurdle winner is Jered! Binocular will not be the 2nd successive 5yo to claim the Champions crown even though he is a fine prospect! Tony McCoy will ride Jered and Barry Geraghty will be on Binocular and as great a 2 prospects as they are it is the older horse that
is favoured due to the improvement he shows in every race!November 5, 2008 at 03:40 #188063What he and Binocular beat is irrelevent it’s the way they did it.
Are you going to use that argument for the same way you’ve been slating Hardy Eustace recently then Fist? ? ?

November 5, 2008 at 04:18 #188070Jered’s progression since the Royal Bond last year has been quite taking but I reckon he’ll need quick ground to be in the shake up. I know it was soft ground at Down Royal but if it turned into a bit of a slog up the hill, I just think he’d struggle to get to a Sizing Europe or a Katchit.
Have a small antepost interest in the horse at a decent price and while Noel’s record at the festival wouldn’t be an encouraging factor, I feel its sometimes a bit overplayed by punters and the media.
The man has had some rotten luck at Cheltenham down the years. How the judge managed to split Hill Society and Champleve in the Arkle I’ll never know. Native Dara was all over winner after the last in the Coral Cup until Whats Up Boys came from another parish to grab him. Harchi the old rogue refusing to go by Hardy in the Champion.
Its somewhat ironic that both Sausalito Bay and Nicanor both beat future Gold Cup winners in their festival wins.

I’m in trouble if GWILSON77 is also siding with Jered.
Now where’s that lay button
November 5, 2008 at 04:54 #188075I backed both Binocular and Crack Away Jack at huge odds but I am far from confident. Katchit will be a tough nut to crack and Sizing Europe is without doubt a very very good horse, . Jered has been impressive but he has met nothing remotely near the class of the aforementioned.
I wish I had your confidence but to be honest if anyone of the five mentioned wins the Champion Hurdle it will come as no surprise to me.
If I was pushed I would stick to Binocular as he should be a much stronger more mature horse this year. He is a brilliant jumper and was a much better horse than Katchit on the flat. The way he won at Aintree was breathtaking snd I am pretty sure at this time Tony McCoy wouldn’t get off him to ride Jered.
But how difficult is it to imagine Sizing Europe being upside at the last and he with that huge stride of his leaving little Katchit and Binocular in his wake.?
I can’t remember so may possible winners at this stage of the Champion Hurdle for a very very long time.
November 5, 2008 at 13:49 #188110There is always many, many unexposed horses at this time of year. By March it will be narrowed down to the select few.
November 5, 2008 at 15:50 #188126No doubt you are correct but there is of course no guarantee the winner will come from that select few. Katchit was right out of favour and ws 5th or 6th in the betting come CH day.
I hope the main 5 can keep apart until the big day, but that’s probably asking too much.
Sublimity and Crackaway Jack look certain to clash in the Fighting Fifth perhaps JP’s Jered will go there? and Binny will go for the Boylesports International Hurdle or vice versa.
Binny is supposibly going for the Xmas Hurdle at Kempton which is no surprise as NIcky Hendorson loves sending his Cheltenham prospects there.
One horse who I keep forgeting about is Osana who was on a suicide misssion last season trying to make all the running in those winds. He could beat any of them early on as Pipe will be all out to take advantage of anything that goes there less than 100% fit.
If anyone knows the plans for him or any the other market leaders be great to hear about them.

Not sure of plans for Osana, but if he stays over hurdles, I’d hope connections might consider dispensing with the services of Tom Scudamore, and offer the ride to Denis O’Regan instead. Such a move would massively increase his chances in a Champion Hurdle, imo.
November 5, 2008 at 16:42 #188136As much as I’m an O’Regan fan, I think that’s a bit unfair on Tom Scu, Grass. IMO no one could have done much better on Osana than he did in the Bula/Champion.

My apologies – I meant to say Paddy Brennan (who rode him in the Bula), rather than Denis O’Regan.
Sorry Friggo, but Scudamore just doesn’t convince me. His race-clock isn’t the best as far as I’m concerned, and I don’t think he is all that strong/balanced in a finish.

Dispensing with the services of Tom Scudamore would increade the chances of many horses …

D’oh! Should have remembered that stealing ten lengths isn’t Scu jnr’s style.

You’ll find few arguments from me on the latter point, to be honest. He isn’t one of the very best by any stretch (almost certainly not deserving of the stable job at the second most powerful yard in the land), but I can’t fault his pacing too much, if anything he thinks too much about it rather than just happily bowling along.
November 6, 2008 at 10:50 #188281Would anyone see an advatage to them changing the way he is ridden? I looked back some of his form and caught a video of him coming from behind and winning.
I know the Pipe tactics of making all have worked in the past but I feel with such a good race in prospect if they don’t make a change he will be a moral certainty to get beat.
I couldn’t help but ask myself how much did running into that 40mp wind with no cover take out of him last year? Held up would he have had a great chance of beating Katchit? or does he nedd to be out there to be seen at his best?
