However the masters of comedy is Laurel And Hardy

And this in my opinion is some of their best work.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Eric, Ernie and Me on BBC 4 just now was very good. A repeat, but I’ve never seen it before. I agree about Dave Allen. Pure class and way ahead of his time.

I used to watch Charlie Chaplin but he is an acquired taste.

Ken Dodd was the funniest comedian I ever saw live, followed by Freddie Starr.

Yesterday, someone reminded me of this classic Starr performance, where he upstaged the great Muhammad Ali:

Dave Allen was brilliant. Aside from his comedy, he showed he was a good straight actor and interviewer/documentary maker as well.

    Ken Dodd was irrepressible.
    Thanks Corky for reminding me.

A great shame he missed the warmth of the hospital when he was transferred home.

I met Ken Dodd a few times. He was often seen in the second hand book shop near Lime Street station. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he was not at all like his manic stage persona. He always came across as a quiet, thoughtful person.

He used to do two shows in those days between Christmas and New Year at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, every year. They were legendary for their late finishes. The taxi drivers used to love them because the last bus was long gone by the time he finished. If he ever caught someone looking at their watch he would say “That’s no use. You need a calendar when you come to one of my shows!”

That’s hilarious Corky – I loved his humour and sometimes was wet eyed watching him on the menace. Thanks for the insight. I rang the hospital where he died and asked average temperatures on the wards where he was. They all clammed up. I phoned another department and they told me temperatures were adequate for all patients. I did not mention Ken but asked if special provision was made for the more senior patients with thinner frames – no she said No. I think the damage was done when he was transferred home and when his condition worsened. He did sadly, like to save money !
