Not sure it’s a big enough race for this section but I’m interested in it,
I have short list,
Masquerading NR[/color:33tmjvs3]
Open eagle £25 E/W @ 40/1
Brockwell £10 @ 14/1 money back 2nd or 3rd
Gabrials king £10 E/W @ 28/1

is my pick, has plenty of scope for improvement, has ran well twice on the all weather recently, generally always there or there abouts at the finish, only really beaten a fair way in the Cesarewitch.
Bet not so Bright are going 20/1 so I’ve taken a bit of that each way.
May 6, 2014 at 11:36 #478208I would love to come on and unearth a little gem that nobody else has spotted, but I can’t. It’s Clowance Estate for me too…..nothing else to be said
May 6, 2014 at 17:04 #478231Last winner above 9 st was Bulwark 6 years ago so think it pays to look at the bottom of the handicap so with the Dascombe and Hills yards going well I will go for Brockwell and Glenard.

It’s pretty much certain this year’s winner will lump more than 9st to victory. There’s only ONE horse carrying less than 9st!!
Statistics aside I would take a chance on Angel Gabrial at 8/1. Mubaraza has a better draw but the Fahey horse is far less exposed at the trip. He stayed on at one pace to be fourth over 14f before getting up late to collar tomorrow’s favourite over 2 miles at Ripon. Chester might not be his ideal track but the extra distance might help offset that. I couldn’t take the 9/2 about the fav in a race like this but it won’t stop some people though.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 6, 2014 at 20:15 #478247A horse is going to make all in this race and lead all the way (hopefully open eagle) wether that can be done from draw 16 I do t know but omeara is bang in form atm
May 7, 2014 at 10:53 #478283Not overly happy with the draw Clowance Estate has, drawn 15 of 17. There have been winners come from double figure draws, but it is a definite advantage at Chester to be drawn low, even in a marathon race like this. I just hope Doyle manages to get him settled and gets a decent position.
Options are to come out like a bullet and cross over in front of the field or accepting that you have to lose ground at the start and work your way through the field. I’m not a big fan of the first option, I think it takes it’s toll at the sharp end of the race having burned up energy at the start. I hope Doyle settles him in, he has come in for a fair bit of flack of late, I hope he keeps his nerve.
May 7, 2014 at 11:49 #478288It’s a minor point, but actually Clowance Estate will start from position 13 of the 17 runners.
That’s because the two reserves were allocated a draw number, so that at the 48hr stage the draw went from 1 to 19. As the reserves were drawn lower than Clowance Estate, when they are removed he effectively moves in by two positions.
Quite why the BHA felt it necessary to drop the old sytem, whereby if a reserve ran he took over the stall position of the non runner, remains a mystery.

Thanks for that, I wasn’t aware he was being shuffled down a couple of stalls. I suppose it is slightly better, but I think he will still probably be dropped in at the back, unless Doyle can work some magic.
I sstill fancy his chances, but I’ve decided to have one in the single figures too, so I’m having a couple of quid on Mawaqeet. He is having his first run for Donald McCain after being switched from Michael Stoute. McCain knows the type of horse to win this, having won this twice in the last 3 years with Overturn and Ile De Re. His last run for Stoute looked a bit disappointing, but his second at York over 2m1f prior to that looked decent form, just being run out of it but running on well.
I’d happily settle for either being placed, or both……a one two would be even nicer

Thanks Martin, looked in to and backed this one based on your confidence!!
May 7, 2014 at 21:04 #478334Thank you the kind comments, its nice when it pays off.
It all seemed to fall into place, KouKash buying the horse to run at his beloved Chester, Ryan Moore booked and the icing on the cake a low draw.

May 8, 2014 at 08:48 #478367Darn it; watching the race I remembered that someone had tipped it. Good call! I used to like Koukash but for some reason he totally irritates me now. Reminded me of when Martin Pipe used to have loads of horses in the National. Can’t see the pleasure in winning a race when most of the horses are yours anyway. Which is a very two faced comment coming from someone that backs half the horses running in the National just so that she can get the winner

Nothing wrong with backing (or running) more than one horse Moehat.
Although I would advise to back some as main bets and some as savers, that way you still get just as much buzz with a good winner.Much rather owners (and trainers) run their horses against each other if they have a good chance of winning. Toronado V Olympic Glory V Sky Lantern in the Lockinge?
Am sure The Doctor has a great sense of achievement getting the 1-2 too.
Value Is EverythingMay 8, 2014 at 11:19 #478378I think it’s his dealings with the Rugby club along with seeming to switch trainers a lot that bothers me. Also the fact that I thought I’d discovered his horses running at Chester a few years ago and now it’s common knowledge
. I’m just being a grump
