Going to Cheltenham for the first time in 26 years next Wednesday, me and my broher are taking my Dad as a 75th Birthday treat.
I’m planning to drive down from North Birmingham and looking for any advice on Parking either at the course itself or any Park and Ride locations, I want to try and avoid spending 2 hours getting back on to the motorway.Any advice will be welcome.
Thanks
Andrew
March 1, 2015 at 14:57 #777016First year that I’ve driven and have paid the £20 for parking at the racecourse. I suppose wherever you are it’ll be gridlocked for a while (hopefully not the two hours you envisage). I hope you and your Dad have a cracking day.
PS This is my first post on this forum and look forward to getting into it. Hi to everybody.
March 1, 2015 at 15:12 #777132There are several privately run parking set-ups quite close to the course, expect to pay £10-£15 on average. Obviously the earlier you arrive the better. Getting out can be busy, no real way around that other than leaving early (but why would you want to do that!!). But you’d be very unlucky if it took you anything over 45 mins to get away.
March 1, 2015 at 15:14 #777155PS: To find these parks (normally fields or private driveways) If you just head towards the course you’ll come across them. Just be careful if you park in a small one that you don’t leave yourself open to being blocked in and end up having to wait on someone else moving their car before you can get out.
March 1, 2015 at 16:02 #777405Thanks both, intend to get there for 11:30 at the latest and have decided to park at the course and worry about getting home at home time!
March 1, 2015 at 22:28 #778975I used to travel up from Bristol but since 2002 from Coventry and parked in the members car park. I have found leaving the course and going north is much easier, although I travel up the A46 rather than motorway so I’m not sure what the motorway route is like. In fact it can be harder getting in than out but I used to get there for about 11.30 and it wasn’t too bad. Generally the quicker you can get away after the last the better although there can be a rush and getting out of the car park is a bigger problem than the roads when going north. The problem with Cheltenham is the access to the course isn’t great and, of course, leaving time coincides with rush hour.

March 3, 2015 at 22:02 #782929Thanks for that Diamond
March 3, 2015 at 22:21 #782990Every year I park in the farmers field east of the crossroads just south of Bishops Cleeve. It’s a 10 min walk to the course, costs a fiver and you get out pretty sharply.
You’re only the other side of the railway from the public car park.

All this East and South business, i’m not Bear Grylls!
Do you have happen to know the post code or the farm name?
Cheers
Andrew

I think this is where we always used to park when we went. Do you exit the field in the bottom corner? You do get out pretty quickly as people let you out on to the lane and the traffic lights are usually controlled by the Police. I seem to remember it being a little longer than a 10 minute walk though which Andrew may need to take in to account for his Dad
March 4, 2015 at 12:40 #787740We always park at the big car park in the field directly opposite the entrance; I’m sure we’ve paid on arrival sometimes [probably costs a bit more to do that], but then we always arrive at the crack of dawn. And always leave straight after the last but one race and have never been in a bad traffic jam because of that. Friends that have left after the last race have spent a couple of hours getting out of the car park. I think if your dad’s 75 and he’s been on his feet all day a long walk back to the car is a no no.
March 4, 2015 at 13:25 #787892Thanks all, don’t worry about my Dad, he’s 75 going on 55, he walks everywhere so anywhere within
a mile or so won’t be a problem.March 4, 2015 at 15:43 #789336Blimey; what’s he on and can I have some [?]…

If you are coming down the A436 towards the course you go round the 3 or 4 roundabouts around Bishops Cleeve then you come to a crossroads with traffic lights and a rugby club on the left. Turn left at the lights and after 100 yds you will see a gate on the right with the farmer taking cash. If it’s decent ground you can drive right across the field to the far corner near the railway embankment. There will be plenty of people parking there. Follow people up the footpath, over the railway and down the other side. From there you’re at the bottom of the racecourse car park. No more than 15 min walk.
I’ve parked there for 10 years or more – the farmer recognises us.
March 5, 2015 at 21:45 #802655Not been for a few years so can’t vouch whether the area has been made permit parking since but used to snag a space around the Marle Hill Road/Marle Hill Parade area. It’s about 15 mins walk from there.
