I can’t help thinking that if Charbel had a Richard Johnson or Sean Bowen on yesterday he would have won.
Bass lost at least 7 lenghts on the home bend by poor jockeymanship which in my view cost the horse the race.
It is not the first time he’s done it and it will be interesting to see if he retains the ride next time and if not if his days are numbered at Bailey’s.September 11, 2018 at 10:58 #1373560Watched it this morning, droffats and don’t think he would’ve won, but you’re right Bass seemed asleep and Charbel would’ve been a lot closer. May be they’re trying to get the horse well handicapped for the Paddy Power?
Am not a great fan of Bass either – seems to ride for second and might have won the Grand National had he kicked on on a stamina laden racehorse… And imo in subsequent Nationals The Last Samuri hasn’t liked being held up. However, I get the impression Kim Bailey might be telling Bass how to ride, so might not be his fault.Charbel used to be a magnificent jumper until an uncharacteristic error in the Arkle – seemed to lose his confidence after that and not the same horse since. They’ve changed tactics to holding the horse up of late and doesn’t have the same enthusiasm and (when held up) now a poor jumper. That may change in a big handicap when allowed to lead.
Value Is EverythingSeptember 12, 2018 at 16:43 #1373727No I agree he may not have won but he would certainly have been close.
Not quite I agree that he is not the same horse since his fall in the Arkle however you could right about a big handicap and the Cheltenham one in November could be right up his street.
Whatever the day Bass is not on i’ll be getting stuck in and probably end up eating my words lolDecember 9, 2018 at 17:05 #1388690Sadly I was not aware that Bass was not riding today otherwise I would have had a good bet.
What a difference a good jockey makes to a horse.
I have not seen Charbel jump so well as he did today. I hope Feilhy keeps the ride as he could well make the horse into a Grade 1 performer which I believe he is. - AuthorPosts
