Lets have a look it and if i’ve missed any please feel free to mention em
AIG reliable form – i’d say so
Greatwood reliable form – i’d say so
International reliable form – i don’t think so
Haydock trial reliable form – i’d say so
Fighting Fifth reliable – i’d say so
Christmas hurdle reliable – i’d say so
That should cover most who would have a chance of winning the CH
We can question some performances as being not good enough
Which ones though?
Well i’d say Detroit City’s Greatwood and the Christmas Hurdle are about on par with each other
Straw Bear disappointed that day and i’d probably forgive him that one and Afsoun fell, hacking up next time
From this knowledge we compile our book, most reliable and best piece of form i would say is the AIG
Hardy fav, BI 2nd fav , Macs 3rd fav , we have Harchibald (if making it) Iktitaf ( disappointing in AIG, but better ground, a maybe) and then we have the young pretenders
The Fighting Fifth and the Haydock trial are more noteworthy than the Greatwood (some may disagree) i mean, beating 150 rated horse is surely better than peeing all over horses rated 20+lb your inferior ( again some may disagree) however all, these winners need to improve, now for potential improvement i’d say Afsoun and then probably Straw Bear and DC
So in order, my tissue at this time
HE, BI, MJ, then maybe, Harchi? Iki? AF, SB, DC
We could put the young guns in front of Harch and Iki, but even doing that I’d say
Good luck DC backers

January 29, 2007 at 19:20 #27608Empty Wallet you seem to have an obsession with detracting from Detroit City’s Champion Hurdle claims.
Leads me to ask the question – Who are you trying hardest to convince everyone else or yourself? ;)
I’ve just give you a tissue as it stands at the moment, i think you’ll find i do not need convincing of anything
January 29, 2007 at 19:30 #27610I find it bizarre that you think Afsoun’s form is stronger that Detroit City’s. I wish you were right as I hold some 70’s about the former but think he has over a stone to find.
January 29, 2007 at 19:33 #27611Dj
I also find it bizarre tha people would rate a handicap performance higher than a Graded one
Would you rate the QEII better than the Lincoln?
January 29, 2007 at 19:35 #27612And DJ
IMO you’ve got a good bet, though i think Afsoun may need another year
January 29, 2007 at 19:45 #27613EW
That would depend entirely on the weight the winner of the Lincoln was carrying and how much he was conceding to his rivals. And anyway, I think the score of Grade 1 wins over hurdles is 2-0 to Detriot City against Afsoun.
January 29, 2007 at 19:48 #27614OK DJ
So swap Afsoun’s position around with DC
Still not there is he?
January 29, 2007 at 19:54 #27615DJ
TF rate DC161,i believe, so 5/6/7 lbs needed to win CH, Afsoun needs 14lb you say, one is FAV other is 20’s
Which one should we back in your opinion?

January 29, 2007 at 20:01 #27616In fairness Reet, your dismissal of the Greatwood race as being utterly irrevalent is not something i would entirely concur with. I do agree however that it would be very dangerous to read too much into it.
My feeling on the haydock trial was that Mounthenry did not run his race and its pretty worthless as a champion trial in its own regard. I think DC deserves to be a shorter price than afsoun and thats why he is..

January 29, 2007 at 20:09 #27617Sorry Sir Harry, you’ve confused me a bit
I’m not dismissing the Greatwood, i’m dismissing the International and i tend agree with you about Mounthenry not running his race(i backed it) but you cannot dismiss Afsoun’s performance just because he did not run his race

We could go through this till the cows come home and not see eye to eye. As Smithy has said on a different thread, Detroit City represents no value at all at current odds. However, nothing has quite the progressive profile coming into the race that he does. Every task he has faced since his hurdling debut he has passed with flying colours, no need for excuses about the small field not suiting him, the ground being too soft, him needing the run. He’s just stuck is little blinkered head out in front and it’s stayed there.
I’m not interesting in backing him at current odds, much like I’m not interesting in backing anything at current prices in the Champion Hurdle, but I really don’t see how he doesn’t have as good a chance of winnning the Champion as what any of Hardu Eustace, Brave Inca and Macs Joy have. Considering he’s shown his wellbeing whilst Harchibald has been stuck in his box, I think he’s got a far better chance of winning the Champion than that rival too.
Quickly to answer your question, though I thin kI already have, we back neither at current prices. Look forward to it all unravelling in a few weeks time. And then we can look forward to Teofilo smashing arses from here to Tattenham Corner in The Guineas on his way to the Triple Crown.
January 29, 2007 at 20:36 #27619Good fair post and DJ we could go on forever
We’ll just have to wait while March ;)
