Why is Workahead entered in Champion Hurdle? Maybe he is back to the form he showed in beating William Munny in December 24 by 7 lengths who subsequently ran ran Kopek Des Bordes close

I’m on him at 66/1 EW and I think the stable was in no rush to get their horses ready for the Spring Festivals. This is one of the more interesting ones and his price is quite acceptable considering that only nine go to post.

In living memory, can anyone remember a poorer looking Champion Hurdle?

Not one horse going into this year’s race with an official rating of 160 or more. At least when Katchit and Punjabi won the race, there were several horses rated 160 or higher in the field.

No, it is very uninspiring. A consequence of no good Flat horses going hurdling and too many novices going straight over fences, perhaps? Plus injuries and the best horse having forgotten how to jump.

I’d argue Epatante and by association Honeysuckle since she basically just beat Epatante and Sharjah, they both won pretty bad Champion Hurdles in the early 2020’s. How good was Sharjah? Not great. Deep down we know this because Honeysuckle ducked back into the Mares Hurdle rather than defending her title in 2023 when the competition heated up. Epatante got turned over numerous times and shared a Grade 1 with Not So Sleepy. We’ve had a few bad Champion Hurdles in the past decade.

The two mile division, by far the best division in terms of a spectacle, has been dying for a while. Many things to blame, one of which is the lack of good flat horses giving it a go but the main issue is breeders being hell bent on churning out soft ground plodders. If I were ever lucky enough to make a fortune and get in the game as an owner, I’d only be interested in Champion Hurdles and Champion Chases. I’d leave the Gold Cup to the slower horses.

Back on topic, I’ll be backing Lossiemouth but not yet. I can see her being subjected to the dreaded Superboost curse come Tuesday morning.

Mullins doesn’t apply headgear very often, which suggests he is still not confident about Lossiemouth. However, now she is running I believe she is the most likely winner. Is The New Lion (or any of the other geldings) good enough to concede her 7lbs?

Golden Ace has a good chance to double up but I don’t believe she is as good as Lossiemouth.

    “Brighterdaysahead.”

Hmmm… not sure how I missed her. Even so, she’s the only one and she’s rated exactly 160, so the point still stands: it’s not a strong race.

Now, something could go and win by fifteen lengths on the bridle and turn in a monster performance, but at this stage it looks a very weak renewal.

This race has fell apart, Lossiemouth won’t have a better chance to win a champion hurdle than this time around.

Not totally convinced by last year’s winner Golden Ace who in my view was fortune that both serious contenders Constitution Hill and State Man both fell (independently, but happily unhurt.)

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

    Wide open imho.
Look at what happened last year.
Just enjoy a punt or two.
Best of luck to all :good:
