Ouch, I got my fingers burned big time by TNO, and that after Champagne Fever. At least there are 3 days to try and recover. For a change I didn’t do much in the way of early bets, just Cup Final who I’m glad to see is down as a runner in the Neptune tomorrow, and his odds have halved. Hope he digs me out of a hole
March 11, 2014 at 16:30 #470903Given all the hype Jezki must now be one of the all-time greats. How we must have underestimated him or perhaps it wasn’t quite the vintage edition seemingly every pundit would have us believe?
I don’t think it was a classic renewal. The fatal fall of Our Conor put a dampener on the the whole affair and looking at the finishing order we see a Hurricane Fly probably at the end of his glory days, as several, including myself, had expected might happen. I didn’t fancy Jezki at all and had expected The New One and My Tent Or Yours to be the main contenders this year. The New One was obviously desperately unlucky and he seems as horse who manages to get beat in races he looked like winning. My Tent Or Yours may have pulled hard but he is becoming a horse who has excuses put up for him when it seems he only had to find a little bit in the finish to claim the victory.
Going forward it would seem The New One has everything you would expect to become the champion. He is only 6 and has a terrific profile of consistency with 13 places from 14 runs and his "worst" result being 6th behind Champagne Fever in the Cheltenham Bumper of 2012.
It would perhaps be harsh to say Jezki was lucky but there were certainly several things that went his way as the race unfolded today.
Sympathies go to all connections of Our Connor who was a stunning winner of last years Triumph
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2014 at 16:38 #470904I’ve always had a soft spot for Melodic Rendezvous – and
when Joe gets a hard-on for a horse
you should listen (Cue Card) – but no way does he place this year.
Lee
Joe will need some Viagra after that flop today LOL
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2014 at 17:05 #470911The first three were all novices over hurdles last year. This race simply proves how great they all are.
However I didn’t expect such a performance from Jezki. I didn’t fancy him either, and had him almost written off. Hats off to him and Barry, they were tremendous.Hurricane Fly is beaten by younger and fresher legs, he is getting older. I can’t be upset from his performance, he has delivered so much to racing during all his career. But what a race this CH was…
I have also just learned the news from Our Conor. I’m gutted. He was young and so talented. My thoughts to the connections.
March 11, 2014 at 18:11 #470922Final piece of value on the eve of the race: EW Jezki at 7s without The New One – Betvictor
Good luck all
Joe
I Hope you were on Joe, nice hit if you were.
March 11, 2014 at 18:27 #470927Such sad news regarding Our Conor
The New One would have won, in my opinion, having not been hampered by the fall of Our Conor. I hope NTD takes The New One back to the Champion Hurdle next year because he will be hard to beat.
March 11, 2014 at 19:09 #470942Indeed, got MR badly wrong, got Jezki right, not so much because I fancied him, simply because he was close to the stupidest ante-post price I’ve ever seen after his last run in Ireland. I thought he’d contract – he’d pulled all the energy out of himself by the 3rd last and was still within 3 lengths of HF at the finish. Add that to his previous race where AP got him into all sorts of trouble and he was the horse to take out of those Irish trials.
What do the bookies do – push him out to 14/1, when to my mind he should have been half that at most. To avoid accusations of after-timing, I did post on this thread that I went in and had my maximum with PP when they went 14s.
As to race quality. Timeform produced a graph (will try and insert it here but they never seem to come out quite right for me). They went back to 1996 and looked at the top 5 rated horses in each Champion Hurdle – took an average and graphed it – today’s was far and away the classiest of all those races. The difference made by the disaster befalling OC can only be guessed at, but Jezki had every right to beat Hurricane Fly on this season’s runs and did not have to improve much on last year’s Supreme to beat MTOY, who, as I mentioned on the MTOY thread decidedly did NOT prove himself a battler at Kempton. Jezki was a very worthy winner in my view.
I put the arrows on the image to point out HF’s past CH victories and highlight what he was facing today.

March 11, 2014 at 19:52 #470956Had a terrible day betting wise but did have a bet on Jezki in November; didn’t top up the bet when his price went out though. However, seeing Sam in tears after the race [jeez do I love the Cheltenham crowd who not only applauded him in a sad way for doing so, but also clapped The Fly out of the paddock]I would have tore the betting slip up there and then if I could. ‘You were robbed’ shouted the man next to me to Sam. We only found out about Our Conor on the car radio coming home; I think I knew when I was there but didn’t want to dig too deep to find out. Strangely enough, as the horses were going out I turned to Mike and said ‘I haven’t see Our Conor’, and I’m so glad now that I didn’t.
March 11, 2014 at 20:00 #470958I thought My Tent was in trouble when Kate Miller had AP on her Mugs Away! segment during the adverts. He tipped it and she said Hills were pushing him out to 5s for mobile customers. Buh-bye!
I watched it in a bookies in South London. Seven punters turned from the FOBTs. One, a Jamaican, had evidently had a large bet on MTOY. ‘Here come McCoy, see McCoy, see him, see him. HERE COME MCCOY!’
He was terribly disappointed. Another punter, dressed in a suit, stormed out. I had small itch in the morning to back My Tent but I resisted and after Miller on Mugs Away! I further demurred and then just watched.I had one bet on Ruby’s in the first plus a few accumulators that you know are losers before you put them on. I eased myself into the first day. Doing the week the other way round: Start off very carefully and build up to lunacy.
March 11, 2014 at 20:27 #470964What a horror fall and a desperate ending to all the hype and hope. Our Conor’s connections must be crestfallen.
5 Live reported the girl who looked after him inconsolable in floods of tears, being propped up by Barry Connell, who presumably wasn’t too far behind her emotionally.
Very sad.
March 11, 2014 at 21:12 #470982Difficult to derive any pleasure from the race in the circumstances. I was pleased the younger horses were far too good for Hurricane Fly. I suppose the hacks had been looking in the thesaurus for a few more unwarranted superlatives for him.

Ha – well to be fair, I suppose it was an on form Peddlers Cross he edged out 3 years ago
March 11, 2014 at 22:05 #471013With a view to next season Nicky Henderson begins his new training regime with My Tent Or Yours:-

If I’m not reading this wrong Pilgarlic, you’re not the greatest fan of the Fly. I kind of understand where you are coming from in that for some reason he has never really had the full idolisation of the Cheltenham masses. I actually think that Cheltenham doesn’t play to his strengths and for that reason I think he deserves all the plaudits for being able to win two Champion Hurdles and being placed in the other, before the ravages of time finally caught up with him today.
Whether you like him or not is neither here nor there, but you can’t overlook that this is a horse that has raced, prior to today, 24 times, winning 21 times, being placed the other 3, and winning 16 grade one races. That puts him on a par with Kauto Star, not exactly bad company to be up there with. It might be a while before you find another racehorse that comes close to Hurricane Fly’s record in the jumps world.
Go on, take your cap off to him just one time before he disappears into the record books, you know you want to
March 12, 2014 at 07:36 #471102Unless my info is out of date, Jezki broke Istabraq’s track record by 3.5 seconds.
