That looks like end of discussion as to whose going to win The Champ Hurdle
Obviously SolwhitPresumably, you’ll regard the 6/1 still offered by Ladbrokes as the bet of a lifetime.
January 24, 2010 at 15:20 #271844Punjabi is still my selection although SOLWHIT is becoming increasingly hard to ignore.
MEDERMIT’s form line with GO NATIVE is interesting; I think he fell off a lot of people’s radars as he was touted as a possible Arkle contender at the start of the season.
DUNGUIB needs to take the Supreme route. A good horse can be ruined by pitching it in too deep too early.

I’ve only had about half a dozen AP bests in my lifetime…and only two ran…
Otherwise yes, bet of a lifetime only IF I knew that Dunguib wouldn’t be running

Speaking only for myself, gus, I think it’s an amazing price for a horse with five G1 wins, whose sole defeat came in a farcical race, and with question marks against almost all his main rivals. If he hadn’t run at Newcastle – an effort which can be completely ignored, imo – he would be a 2/1 shot by now.

I give it 24hrs tops before they are into line with everyone esle.

Donnas Palm has a serious loss of form last year…ignore these four races and judge him by the rest of his record last year and this and the only other horse to beat him was Hurricane Fly, all out in a photo.
I think he was flattered to finish so close to Hurricane Fly (slowly run race only about 12 lengths covering the whole field) and in any case Hurricane Fly still has to prove that he is a Champion Hurdle horse. Donnas Palm has been very well placed to rack up three wins at a level well below Champion Hurdle class.
January 24, 2010 at 15:42 #271856Donna’s Palm ran well today beat Sublimity and Celestial Halo and his finishing was very pleasing, I think he would want further and could improve at Cheltenham. Think they will look to Aintree wih him more though. Doesnt have the speed of some horses though.
Zaynar is still the one for me though, no other horse will apperciate the long finish more than him and it will take some horse to pass him.

Credit to Ladbrokes for taking a view. We’re all quick to knock bookies when it suits.
I certainly think it’s a generous price. I’m not sure I’d go as far as “amazing” but Solwhit will go to Cheltenham with very good prospects.

Which is why i am glad that Walkon is being held back by the team until Winter of 2010, an awesome horse, very talented, and another good youngster in the yard.
Will be great to see him take on the likes of Zaynar and company, when he is fit.
January 24, 2010 at 16:22 #271864Sorry to keep asking you these questions but is Walkon having stem cell treatment as well/ I’m assuming that, as they though there was a slight chance of getting him back for this season, they were just resting him.
January 24, 2010 at 16:25 #271866but the one I keep going back to is Solwhit. Has stamina and a turn of foot, and I think the race will be run to suit him.
If the ground was heavy,he would be 2/1fav,but it cant possibly be! So i dissagree most strongly! The race is run on the 1st day of the festival, its going to be goodish ground,in a match you would probably go 4/5 Solwhit v Evs Go Native. I bet you an Ev £50 Go Native finishes in front of Solwhit big boy!
Is this you trying to win your Mikael money back already?
OK, you’re on. An even £50 in a match between your Go Native and my Solwhit – whichever finishes nearest the front in the Champion Hurdle wins the bet. NRNB.
You getting twitchy yet, Gord?
January 24, 2010 at 16:50 #271875Like i keep saying Grass, Solwhit is so ground dependant,on ground like he got today,he will be a tough nut to crack because he is one of the very few who want it as soft as possible! On normal Champion hurdle ground he will be left flat footed! The horse has no speed,he just has stamina in abundance! On good ground Go Native WILL cruise past him! Take that to the bank with you!

You’re on a different planet, TAPK – if Go Native cruises past Solwhit at any stage in the final three furlongs, or indeed finishes in front of him, I’ll eat my own arm.
Solwhit doesn’t need soft ground, is still improving (he had, until today, run as few races over hurdles as Go Native and is a year younger) and proved when beating Sublimity at Leopardstown that it doesn’t matter how ‘slow’ he appears to be; the runner-up was travelling all over Solwhit that day, off what was at best a modest pace, and still failed to head him. Go Native on the other hand almost managed to get himself chinned by Starluck over a course and distance which should have been ideal for a ‘cruiser’.
The 6/1 about Solwhit is, as Grass’ has said, incredible, and both he and Punjabi (still) stand out. American Trilogy might also be worth a small each-way interest at 66/1.

Hope you guys have got room for another arm…..put mine on the menu, Go Native is never going to beat Solwhit
January 24, 2010 at 20:00 #271903Good stuff lads (and lasses). After today I have taken a small ante post interest in Punjabi @ 16.5. Solwhit won in Ireland but struggling to beat Sublimity on soft ground does not strike me as great form. Go Native’s win in last years Supreme is still in my mind and he is my danger at present. Last year Punjabi went off at 22-1, largely ignored by punters and I can see the signs that it is happening again. Ignored for more hype horses who do not have the all important course form (Solwhit).
