I may be being niave but that horse had no intention of running competitively today. Yes he hinted at it not being a 4-7 shot this morning but he really should have told us it was just a run out for him, which it was. It cruised up as easily as the winner and was never once ridden out. He just never tried. In my opinion David Pipe has cheated the punters today.
With due respect KS1, you are being more than a little naive.
The horse has been off for 2 years, runs in a discipline it has no experience of, on ground it doesn’t like, and over a distance which it probably doesn’t stay (over hurdles).
Anyone taking the odds on such a horse has cheated themselves, no matter how much they would like to blame it on others.January 10, 2008 at 14:30 #134452I may be being niave but that horse had no intention of running competitively today. However three stone is a hell of a long way below form. I’m amazed to be honest that a horse can run that far below form.
I could eat nothing but pies for five years and surely not decline that much.
January 10, 2008 at 14:54 #134463Chasers looking to exploit favourable marks over hurdles, often fall way below expectations.
I remember being burned when backing Take The Stand on his debut a few seasons back. I think he was something like 30lbs well-in, and was tailing-off by half-way – this after finishing second in a Gold Cup!
January 10, 2008 at 16:09 #134479he needed the run ?
how many times do we hear that trainers can ready horses for a win after long lay-offs, isn’t that what training is about, getting the horse to the track fit enough to win ?
it don’t cost much to lay a 4-7 shot

For Celestial Gold they write that it stays 4 miles and acts on soft going, so either the horse is not right or it as ran along long way below form.
January 10, 2008 at 22:16 #134538If he was half the horse he was, he’d have won on the bit today, hurdles, ground, whatever. I’d safely say you can forget about him at the top level after that- he would have been plenty fit enough to win today if he was able.
January 11, 2008 at 03:58 #134560Horse was definitely going well enough to get closer to the leaders on the far side and his jockey made sure he wasn’t going to. At that point I must admit he looked like a non trier.
However impossible to say whether he was stopped or not as he was out of shot for the last quarter of the race……….probably was no where near fit and just out for a spin.
January 11, 2008 at 09:23 #134579The horse was palpably lacking in fitness rather than murphy being a non tryer. Celestial Gold went out like a light on tacky ground after being within a few lengths of the leaders. 10 year old, plenty of time off the racecourse, there was always a chance it would run such a race.
