I know we’ll probably never see them race against each other, which is a shame, but hypothetically who would you fancy to win say the Aintree Hurdle if they were to go toe to toe?
Personally, I think Hurricane Fly would have too many gears for him but it would be some spectacle.
May 6, 2011 at 23:40 #354186I did not see today’s race but from what I have heard Hurricane Fly demonstrated flat race speed when asked. With the win of St. N.Abbey it was a big day for Montjeu all round.
May 7, 2011 at 00:09 #354197There is no comparison, HF is vastly superior
May 7, 2011 at 04:24 #354218Hurricane Fly would laugh at Big Buck’s.
Paul Nicholls may think that Big Buck’s is the best horse he has ever trained, but he would not even entertain the thought of tackling Hurricane Fly over the intermediate distance.
It should happen, but it won’t.
May 7, 2011 at 08:26 #354231Big Bucks is a proven stayer who arguably will be better at even further (though he doesn’t need to go further).
Entertaining the thought of BB coming back to 2m4f to face a horse that is full of speed is just ridiculous.
Therefore I’d rather compare them on their respective achievements. Big Bucks is unbeaten and has won three World Hurdles, but I’d have to say that Hurrican Fly is the better horse simply because the strength in depth in the top two-mile division is much stronger than the three-mile division.
That’s not to say BB wouldn’t beat anything put before him if more quality and quantity of stayers arrived on the scene, but right now, HF is simply destroying the best two milers around on a regular basis.

May 8, 2011 at 12:55 #354431Both champions in their own area. Big Buck’s officially rated 174, Hurricane Fly 172 but possibly still improving. Wouldn’t like to have to choose if I was Ruby
May 8, 2011 at 17:30 #354463i dont think either would beat either over their optimum distance.
thats like saying would ussain bolt beat paula radcliffe in a race? over 100m yes, but not a cat in hells chance in a marathon.
id love to see big bucks over fences now he has his 3 world hurdles, but that would be debatable.
hurricane fly in my opinion has as good’a chance than anything else has if not better than equalling istabraq’s record. getting 2 champion hurdles would be legendary let alone 3.
May 8, 2011 at 21:53 #354509I think Hurricane Fly would beat Big Bucks over 2m, 2m 4f, 3m, in a flat race, over the national fences, you name it.
I’m a big fan of Big Bucks but Hurricane Fly looks different gravy.
May 8, 2011 at 22:06 #3545152m4f of Cheltenham would see BB hand HF his lilly ass on a platter, IMO
. It seems people vastly underestimate the class of BB.He’d do what he has to do, like he does.
May 8, 2011 at 22:16 #354518Too close to call … though I voted for Big Bucks.
The way I see it, if there’s a horse who could beat Hurricane Fly, then it’d be Big Bucks. But then, if there’s a horse that could beat Big Bucks, then it’ll be Hurricane Fly
May 8, 2011 at 22:33 #354522Just seeing this thread put a smile on my face! Think Big Bucks would just edge it. Can not get this years Liverpool Hurdle out of my mind!

I think people are underestimating just how good Big Buck’s is, whilst overestimating what Hurricane Fly achieved in hacking over a horse he’s beaten by a similar distance four times in the last six months.
May 8, 2011 at 23:39 #354539I think Hurricane Fly would beat Big Bucks over 2m, 2m 4f, 3m, in a flat race, over the national fences, you name it.

May 8, 2011 at 23:45 #354541Why will Paul not run him in a proper race then instead of this mickey mouse category that seems to suggest not fast enough for champion hurdling and not good enough at jumping for the championship chases?
May 9, 2011 at 09:23 #354579Over 2 miles Big Bucks wouldn’t get Hurricane Fly off the bridle. It’s laughable to even suggest that Big Bucks would have the speed to get near the Fly over the minimum trip.
Over intermediate trips it’s anyone’s guess. A line through Mourad in the Hattons Grace suggests that there wouldn’t be much between them. I’m not sure how Big Bucks would handle the drop to 2m4 but we know that Hurricane Fly stays that trip in heavy ground at Fairyhouse. If they ever did meet in a Hattons Grace or an Aintree Hurdle on decent ground, I think Hurricane Fly’s turn of foot would be decisive.
Nothing has been able to get to the bottom of Big Bucks over 3 miles and I don’t think anything will unless Quevega goes for the Stayers Hurdle instead of the mares or Big Bucks comes to Punchestown. Hurricane Fly would probably struggle over three miles given how keen he can be over shorter trips. Horses that excel as staying hurdlers – Galmoy, Baracouda, Inglis Drever, Big Bucks etc. tend to race rather lazily.
May 9, 2011 at 09:28 #354581Yes Big Bucks in his dire category racing against Muck like Quevega year in year out.
Lets seem him take on a true Champion.
Quevega
Hurricane Fly
Big Bucks2m4f…what a race that would be
