The writing was on the wall a long, long way from home. He didn’t jump with any fluency and made some peculiar shapes in the air. But he went out like a light and I doubt he would have won even if he had jumped better.
I don’t think he would have won over any distance today and there didn’t look to be any excuse.

I suppose it is not impossible. But I never like excuses being made for beaten horses and it does look like straw clutching. The horse didn’t even finish second.
