It was quite a successful Punchestown Festival for the ones who were courageous enough to bring teir horses over. This also includes Nicky and maybe will see more of them at the DRF.

Always good to see British runners in Ireland, and they always get a great welcome

Said this for a while but if you want to be competitive for Cheltenham, then get over to Ireland and compete. Okay, it was against some of their lesser lights but it was nice to see a number of different trainers having runners and winners. Lets continue this for Leopardstown at Christmas and the DRF.

I haven’t seen any comment on this (may have missed it) – the British horses running in handicaps at Punchestown were mainly given slightly lower marks than their current official British mark.

Bill Baxter and Petit Tonnerre both won off marks 2lbs lower than their British Mark. Jeriko Du Reponet was 1lb lower. The largest difference I saw was 3lbs, which applied to Stoner’s Choice an also ran in the 3M handicap hurdle.

So a reverse of what has been happening for many years at Cheltenham.

Greatrex mentions it, in the RP link that Ruby posted above, ap :good: :

Greatrex said: “I noticed from my part that the Irish handicapper gave all of mine a good chance – they were all dropped a couple of pounds.”

Barry Geraghty talked about this on RTE, apracing. I was only half listening, but I believe he also said that the British handicapper is being more lenient on British horses to start with, and so it is making it a more level playing field.

This would be some kind of incentive for the raiding party, a 2 or 3 lbs. allowance. But it wouldn’t make sense when the Irish come over. Cromwell and Co. will make sure that they already have a rating of at least half a stone lower when entered for Cheltenham.

Maybe British trainers should just be as professional as some of their Irish counterparts.

British trainers are good enough provided they have the ammunition – it really is that simple. Instead we get loads of analysis of why they’re not as good as the Irish…..

    Sorry, I’m not buying it……
