Just wondering what all us Arcano backers think of leaving a horse that unfit on the racecourse?
I would much rather be sitting at home now with Canford Cliffs, theres a part of me begining to question Brian Meehan certianly after Crowded House who was run with plenty of work to do and considerably flopped in the Derby, now if your target is just 2 weeks away wouldn’t you like to be a bit more fit.
This is something Aiden likes to do with a slow introduction but his horses are worked intensively at 2, and he could have 3 or 4 Arcano’s to goto work with not just 1.
I am a litte concerned here guys.

Guineas day is 1st May, not 17th April
Dante last year, 14th of May not 6th June.
April 17, 2010 at 20:47 #290882On that performance today,it doesn"t matter how fit he was,as to the eye,Arcano was very dissapointing! What i would say is,his form as a 2yo would put him in the Guineas picture,so that would be my only hope if i had a serious bet on the horse as at the moment his supporters are hanging from their finger tips over the edge of Canford cliffs! He too failed to show the spark that connections insist is there!Again to the eye,i fail to see "Wonderhorse" comparisons! If Richard Hughes does cover him up in the Guineas,he will burn himself out by fighting throughout the race!Guineas winners tend not to be of the Freaky type of nature!
April 18, 2010 at 08:32 #290928I wouldn’t have thought Sheikh Hamdan was too impressed with Arcano’s preparation as it ran for the first time in his colours having been left with Meehan:-
From the Sportlife website:-
Arcano was unbeaten in three races as a juvenile, culminating in his Group One Prix Morny success, but performed lifelessly on his return and was beaten seven lengths into third.
Angus Gold, racing manager for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: "We’re disappointed on the face of it. We knew he’d need the run, but it’s disappointing the first two have quickened right away from him.
"We’ll see how he comes out the race and how he is over the next 10 days.
"He’ll have needed the run and there’s no point making decisions now.
"But on that performance alone, you’d have to say he wasn’t a Guineas horse."
April 18, 2010 at 09:53 #290939The horse was very babyish in the pre-parade ring and was playing up behind the stalls. I never saw the horse as a two year old, but he was one of the smaller ones and did not look fully wound up for the race IMO.

I cannot recall a classy horse of Meehan’s winning first time out since David Junior in the Dubai Duty Free. It’s not a stable I ever want to be on "fresh".

I don’t quite understand. Arcano has always been with Mr Meehan, and was bought by Sheikh Hamdan after the July Stakes,
before
the Morny… so how "first time in his colours"??

I was just about to point this out.
To say it was just a fitness issue is simplifying things and we’ll know more after it’s next run. There could be all manner of reasons he lost like he hasn’t trained on, didn’t get the trip, the Morny form was not all it seemed, the best 2 horses on the day beat him.
I’m always wary when trainers (or racing managers) like to get their excuses in first and maybe that was the case here. I guess time will tell, but he won’t be the first "superstar" 2 year old who never quite reached the heights.April 18, 2010 at 13:46 #290975I don’t quite understand. Oops I forgot the great pretender Delegator in last year’s Craven. Apologies Mr Meehan.

ARCANO, a disappointing third in Saturday’s Greenham Stakes at Newbury, will miss the 2,000 Guineas on May 1.
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt, who won last season’s Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville but missed the Dewhurst Stakes due to a setback, is to be given more time before racing again.
Angus Gold, racing manager to the colt’s owner, said: "We were expecting Arcano to come on for the run at Newbury, but hoping that he would quicken better than he did, and I don’t think he was quite mentally there in the Greenham.
"Youhave to push horses early if they are to run in the Guineas and, in his case, it looks as if he won’t be ready, so we’re going to give him more time."
Sheikh Hamdan’s retained jockey, Richard Hills, is now set to partner the Mark Johnston-trained Awzaan in the Newmarket Classic.
I knew they was thinking past the Guineas, golden jubilee it is then!

Who, Meehan? I think that’s a bit harsh, he’s done ok so far hasn’t he? So his best 2 year olds don’t train on to be good 3 year olds, but he’s not the only trainer who’s had that problem. He’s won enough big races with older horses though to suggest with the right horse he’s more than ok.
