Being a Carlisle boy I’m praying we get up in the playoffs
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
April 26, 2026 at 10:21 #1764906Lots of non league clubs have argued that the system of only two clubs being promoted from the National League into League 2 is unfair. I believe that argument has been strengthened this season.
It is tough on Rochdale to accumulate over 100 points and not get automatic promotion. While in League 2, five teams have averaged less than a point a game but only two of them will be relegated.
The National League is no longer the Dog and Duck League. It is in effect a League 3. It has a lot of former Football League teams, several well supported via large fanbases and with money behind them.
The likes of Rochdale, Southend, Carlisle, Scunthorpe etc would be far better assets to the Football League than some of the teams towards the foot of League 2 this season. Why should it be made more difficult for them to get out of their division than it is for teams to be promoted out of League 2 (three automatically, one more via the play offs)?
April 26, 2026 at 10:29 #1764907No mention of Berwick Rangers, now in the Lowland League alongside East Stirlingshire, Albion Rovers, Cowdenbeath and Clydebank all names I remember from the results service back in the day.
April 26, 2026 at 10:39 #1764908And there is Brechin City in the Highland League.
April 26, 2026 at 10:48 #1764910Crawford the goalkeeper
Topping and swallow I think we’re the centre backs and the little winger Brian Pollard, always wanted to go to Bootham Cresent and when Chelsea visited in 70s I went ended 2-2Those names are a mystery to me as I’ve only lived in York for around 20 years. I struggle to name any of the current team

Bootham Crescent ground is no more, demolished and now a housing development. York City moved out in 2021 and now play at the LNER Community Stadium on the edge of town, shared with York Knights rugby league club. Built in 2020 it’s very smart and a well-used ‘hub’ for residents, having a swimming pool, gymnasium, library, cafe, and an NHS drop-in centre.
April 26, 2026 at 12:04 #1764916I notice it is the Dundee Derby in the SPL today. It is the closest football derby match in Britain. The grounds of Tannadice and Dens Park are next to each other:
April 26, 2026 at 13:12 #1764919Always a good match the Dundee’s. I believe its a bit like the two Sheffield sides, ground share NEVER.
April 26, 2026 at 13:24 #1764923There’s a reason why Frankie Boyle uses Dundee as a butt of his humour , it’s a rough old town , as for the football well Jim McLean can answer that …. have some of that

April 26, 2026 at 17:32 #1764940Berwick Rangers, now in the Lowland League alongside East Stirlingshire, Albion Rovers
Berwick Rangers should be in the National League North…
East Stirlingshire’s home is Falkirk and they share a ground with Stenhousemuir.
Albion Rovers are based in Coatbridge, a stone’s throw from Airdrie.
None of which I knew, but Wikipedia did.

Steady on – it is a long enough journey to the likes of South Shields and Spennymoor! And we can add Hebburn to the list next season.
April 27, 2026 at 19:37 #1765049As a bit of a saddo for Football of yesteryear, I keep an eye on the Scottish teams that have left the SFL and now ply their trade at lower levels.
Brechin finished 2nd in the Highland League for the third year in a row. Last two years was on goal difference and this year they managed to lose their last two games and miss out by a point. Champions Brora Rangers automatically progress to a play-ff with Edinburgh City to get into SFL for next season. The Lowland League Champions Linlithgow Rose were not allowed to progress as they did not have the required “Bronze” level licence to be promoted.
When I was younger we used to spend holidays in Aberdeen at the end of August and apart from visits to Pittodrie was also able to see games at the Angus “big 4” of Brechin, Forfar, Montrose and Arbroath and I still follow their fortunes. Arbroath and Forfar both have a chance of promotion having made the play-offs. Arbroath in the Premier League would be some achievement!April 27, 2026 at 20:19 #1765063I remember seeing Arbroath’s ground, Gayfield Park, on a family holiday many years ago. I believe it is the closest ground to the open sea in Europe.
April 29, 2026 at 15:12 #1765220The media coverage we (York) have had since events at Spotland on Saturday have been nuts.
There were over 4,000 of us at the LNER for a screening of the game and a few left when Rochdale scored. We stayed and because of the nature of our goal it was a few seconds before I realised what had happened.
It would have been a travesty if we hadn’t won the league but Rochdale kept getting out of jail with injury time winners in their previous three games. It felt inevitable that there would be more injury time madness.
And so apt that both teams scored in that period.
I don’t think any City fan will ever witness anything like that again in our lifetime and I hope we continue to progress. With the ambitions of the Ugglas we should hopefully do that.
Unfortunately the council/police have at least for now put paid to any hope of an open top bus parade which wasn’t a problem back in 1984 (4th Div Champs and 1st team to score 100 pts) and our two play off wins in 1993 and 2012.
Still there will be a sizeable crowd at the ground tonight for a get together and whilst like a lot of York fans we miss Bootham Crescent, the LNER is a great facility. Although with us doing well and the Knights now in Super League the current capacity of 8500 here may not be enough in the future.
