12 Champs Elysees (GB) – Alan Garcia 15-1September 16, 2008 at 10:53 #8866It is possibly a bit early, with the arc not even out of the way but was just having a thought the other day that Dermot Weld has Casual Conquest, Winchester and Famous Name to chose from for this race and whichever one goes will no doubt have a very good chnace as they will be targetting that race specifically where many horses go there having failed in the arc.
Does anyone know the prices available on Casual Conquest and Famous Name for the race, as cant get on Oddschecker from the computer I am using? The Racing Post have Winchester priced up at 14-1 which may be a bit tight as I would have him behind the other two. Also has anyone read anything lately regarding targets for those three?
Has anyone else got any other fancies?
September 16, 2008 at 11:37 #181232I’d imagine Famous Name might be more suited to the Champions Stakes – have you heard Weld mention his next target?
Is Casual Conquest not running in the Arc? I think he’d probably be the Weld horse I’d fancy most for the Breeders Cup Turf.
Schiaparelli would be well suited, as a horse who lies up with the pace.
September 16, 2008 at 11:42 #181233According to Oddschecker:
Winchester is general 14/1
Casual Conquest is 20/1 but is only quoted in 4 lists (Boyles, BlueSq, 888Sport, & Hills)Famous Name doesn’t seem to be quoted in any bookmakers
September 16, 2008 at 15:21 #181265Cheers folks, was hoping they might be bigger than that. Hopefully after the arc there may be a price check.
September 16, 2008 at 21:36 #181318Dermot said that CC has been "Put Away" ’till next year.God and Dermot alone know when Famous Name will return to action.Possibly the Champion Stakes. As for Winchester I bet he has already gone over the top by now.To quote Aidan last spring "Dermot’s horses are very forward" after Winchester or one of his (Dermot) fillies won.The glorious Spring tanked into a miserable summer. But he did wonderful at Galway and other courses west of the Shannon.
October 14, 2008 at 16:19 #184727The US brigade are a little short of top-class turf routers this season.
I haven’t been thrilled by Grand Couturier, who appears to be their best hope of defending the title under the US representation.
Coolmore’s choice will be interesting. They might have locked Frozen Fire away for a campaign next season, if both Soldier Of Fortune and Duke Of Marmalade are retired (seems likely IMO).
Don’t know if there are any Arc also-rans journeying to California.
Red Rocks and Eagle Mountain add their own unique twist, the former being very, very fresh and the latter second-up off a long layoff.
What could be of Winchester? It’s a hard formline to read, but I think he become a horse of some serious class after winning the Secretariat. The sharp turns, lasix and hood all combined to serious effect.
He’s a router with brilliance, so to speak. It is a mismatch that was made for stateside competition.
October 14, 2008 at 22:11 #184765Change of stable for Red Rocks ahead of this target and the fact that Red Rocks hasnt run since the Man O War is slightly worrying, only slightly mind.
I’ll be siding with Red Rocks as I believe this is a fantastic turf horse in waiting. The turf win over Curlin this year was no fluke and at 9’s this could be a value bet.
In the markets, Red Giant is shortening all the time but I havent seen enough of this one to comment. Anyone know much on Red Giant?
For an outsider, 16’s on Youmzain (albeit an unlikely runner) is interesting. If Youmzain was to attend Santa Anita on 25th October I think he would win but, as I say, this is extremely unlikely

[b:2gm8wdr3]http://www.breederscup.com/content/2008_BCWC_PreEntries.pdf[/b:2gm8wdr3]October 20, 2008 at 07:03 #9107Sir Michael Stoute sends over impressive St Leger victor CONDUIT whilst record-searching Aidan O’ Brien sends SOLDIER OF FORTUNE over in the hope that the Soldier can add another group one victory to the tally of 21.
In addition to the hyped duo, Dermot Weld sends WINCHESTER back to America in a bid for a second victory this term and the ex-Brian Meehan trained RED ROCKS aims for a second consecutive turf group 1 in America.
Soldier of Fortune has been trained specifically for an Autumn campaign this year and despite the fact that the Arc may have been the main target I feel he may be fresh enough to put in a good challenge here – especialyl with Red Rock Canyon setting the perfect pace for him. However, I’m still somewhat split on my opinion of whether Soldier of Fortune can win this.
I feel that Red Rocks has been targeted at this race since transferring trainers from Meehan and can be strong enough to deny O’Brien’s BC Turf runner for the second year in a row. Red Rocks finished a reasonable distance ahead of Dylan Thomas last year and if Youmzain is indeed performing reasonably similar to this time last year then Red Rocks should have the beating of SOF (through that formline of Youmzain).
Red Rocks finished 3rd last year, beaten by a considerable margin I might add, yet I believe connections would not put Red Rocks in this unless they had him completley prepared.
2pts RED ROCKS
Good luck if youre playing in this one – enjoy the race if youre not
October 20, 2008 at 15:47 #185558Agreed, since Red Rocks will probably be suited by more normal conditions than last year, and is admirably consistent at this level.
October 21, 2008 at 03:57 #185650Cannot deny Winchester has added 6-8 lengths on his ability since lasix and a hood.
If it is enough for him to win a Breeders’ Cup title fight – a price of 10-1 or better I will take.
October 22, 2008 at 14:08 #185837Great photo of the track…
Shame that Tom Durkin won’t be doing the commentary for the Juvenile Fillies!
October 22, 2008 at 19:28 #185896I can’t believe Soldier Of Fortune will be suited to this very tight track on quick ground. He looks very good lay material for me.

October 23, 2008 at 09:10 #185969Coolmore horses will be running on Lasix for the first time also.Should add a couple of lengths to their performance.Especially if they are fresh like Soldier of Fortune.
