Can anyone see the sense in using Red Rock Canyon as pacemaker when there’s a St Leger winner with a decent turn of foot in the field?
In hindsight (wonderful thing) just a steady pace with have benefitted SOF although I still doubt it would have made a significant difference.SOF travels ok on fast ground, but needs a much stiffer track to be effective at 12f on it.
Both he and his pacemaker were ridden to give him the best possible chance in the circumstances, (and Coolmore have far more idea of how to ride their horses than Matt Chapman ever will).
It certainly made a difference to Conduit though.
October 26, 2008 at 07:13 #186555Reet at the risk of you cutting my head of Soldier of Fortune is probaly the most overrated horse in training. He was hyped up by the bookies when he won what was a race against unfit horse at the start of the season and hasn’t raised a gallop since.
Sorry mate but I think he’s a boat and will never win a good prize mid season to end
October 26, 2008 at 07:53 #186558SOF will be remembered for his impressive irish derby performance which probably says it all.

Raven’s Passes em all !!!!!!!
October 26, 2008 at 12:22 #186569Ryan Moore gave Conduit an awesome ride. Sir Michael Stoute is great with his older horses and this fellow could be a real force to be reckoned with next season.
Also this Mike De Kock is a really good trainer. The improvement that he’s got out of Eagle Mountain & Archipenko this year has been really impressive.

That’s your opinion; his Arc 3rd, off a pace that didn’t suit, suggests it may be mistaken.

SOF ran a fantastic race in the Turf , even if his jockey didn’t ride one….the horse was asked to go through suicidal fractions, and all credit must go to him for not falling completely into a hole.
Run the race again but this time with Murtagh riding a sensible race, and I’m sure the result would be very different.
Ahhhhhh, the advantages of fractional timing.

Zarkava achieved very little in the Arc then.
October 29, 2008 at 20:04 #187046Soldier Of Fortune is a rock solid group1 horse, no two ways about it Fists. It would be possible to say that the conditions he likes are also the conditions that Youmzain likes, and so with youmzain about he may struggle to beat him, but then SOF did beat Youmzain at epsom. Soldier Of Fortune IMO is at his best with plenty of cut under him (probably heavy), and there hasnt been many opportunuites for him this season on his own terms, epsom probably being the best match for those conditions, and he won at epsom.
The fact that he hasnt had many opportunities this season doesnt mean he wont have them next season.
