For me Toronado just isn’t as good as some people think he is
You mean me Steve…..

He won two group 1’s but was never as good as Canford Cliffs despite what Hannon said at times but I loved the beast and still do, think he’ll make a good stallion. I was there on both occasions when he won those group 1’s and he’ll go down as one of my favourites.

November 2, 2014 at 00:52 #494225Hannon said of Toronado: "There are no excuses, he hit the gates and was travelling comfortably, but he just didn’t finish his race. It was disappointing."

I didn’t see the race, don’t tell me Spencer came too late again?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 2, 2014 at 10:19 #494270A great ride from Spencer. If Moore had been riding we would all be fainting and begging the rest of the world to recognise. Sorry to put a negative spin on it, but with all the attention on Moore’s international exploits this season, Spencer recently has ridden a Grade 1 winner in Canada, finished a close fourth in one of Australia’s biggest races, and ran in the money on four occasions at the Breeders Cup, three of them on relative longshots.
Can you imagine the furore if Joseph O’Brien had drawn a blank and been brushed aside on two fairly short-priced turf favourites? Nothing against Moore, but the undeserved negativity thrown at quality jockey’s is a bit frustrating and ignorant on occasions. Spencer and Joseph are much appreciated on the international stage, more so than domestically.
The place to be was on the speed, and the onus was on Spencer to get his mount across. He caught the home-based jockey’s napping, and demonstrated his tactical awareness and horsemanship in what has proved a very demanding race for our jockey’s in the past.
What a journey this horse has provided for connections. Osbourne is an absolute credit, and it goes without saying that he should be given more ammunition. A great effort from both of his challengers.

No he didn’t. It was a good ride.

Thanks, I just wondered if the elements had conspired against him and he flew through for an unlucky second.
The only race I saw was Toronado’s, which I stumbled upon streaming free to air on the Breeder’s Cup website. I can’t get ATR now that I’ve ditched the Sky box.
All jockeys have their fans and critics. I just don’t believe you can hold every horse up for a turn of foot and for that reason Jamie Spencer is not a favourite of mine. Each to their own, every jockey has good and bad rides in the course of a career.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I am sure you are not his only fan Nathan.
I had hoped for better from Toronado this year. I thought that with maturity he might have overcome the problems that saw some below par efforts from him last year.
I couldn’t help but get the opinion that his duels with Dawn Approach last year were hyped more like a match between two good but not great boxers.
He may well still be at the level he was last season but I would doubt anyone could argue he’s any better this year.
Sometimes you take a liking to a horse for reasons other than pure ability and it was good that he wasn’t rushed off to stud and was able to land a good pot at Royal Ascot. Worth remembering he was 7/2 for that race at one stage and went off a shade of odds on on the day.
I wish him well at stud.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 2, 2014 at 23:12 #494368Toronados run at Ascot and in the very narrow defeat to Charm Spirit showed that he retained enough ability to win last nights race. That he didnt shows he clearly had an off night. Its worth remembering that some horses dont adopt to being out there.

November 3, 2014 at 19:36 #494431Tornado had an off night as have a lot of top European horses. Some don’t take to the travelling but others like St nicks abbey came to life in the breeders cup. What was noticeable was the lack of top older horses from Europe. Just a pty magician got injured as he would have gone close if back to his best.
