Hello,
The man goes to Church, with his immediate family, gandchildren and non runners, what the **** is wrong with that!

Only that it must be difficult to get the horses into the local church Doyley, nothing else.
October 19, 2008 at 00:46 #9097Some performance with New Approach.Second in the first Classic over a mile, beaten a head and after winning the Derby and the Irish Champion stakes comes out at the end of the season to win the mile and 2 at Newmarket as he said after Darley Dewhurst "horses have to pay their way".
A simple philosophy when training horses.A somewhat distant man but a wonderful trainer nevertheless.October 20, 2008 at 00:59 #185478He’s had a great couple of years and has long been at the very top of his profession.
Could do with a PR makeover though (although I am sure that doesn’t bother him one iota).

If he’s such a ‘wonderful trainer’, how come it took a comprehensive defeat and a hard-fought win, for him to realise that NA needed a pacemaker to be at his best over 10f?

Despite the fact that the pacemaker didnt need to be used on Saturday?

That’s a fair point I suppose, but it could also be a case of JB having a bit too much confidence in the class NA. Having said that, NA only suffered a narrow defeat in two guineas against what AOB considers his best ever miler, so I can understand where the confidence in his speed came from.
Hindsight is great and we could so easily be talking about an undefeated superhorse and how high we should rate it, with the benefit such; i.e. if NA had a pacemaker all season would he have been beaten? I think not IMO although DOM wouldn’t have minded a stronger pace in the juddmonte either.
For me, NA will go down as one of the classiest (if not, demented!) i’ve seen in the past 20 years, albeit with a pacemaker!

We’ll never be able to say for sure, although I’d lean towards the pacemaker having the desired effect on him both mentally and trip wise.
October 20, 2008 at 12:35 #185517Why is a thread about Jim Bolger in the "Big Race Discussion" section?
October 20, 2008 at 14:42 #185547Because when Darley eventually get round to sponsoring the Derby, the name will be changed to the Epsom Jim Bolger?
October 20, 2008 at 15:50 #185560"Running in the Arc would be problematical because of the draw factor."
Come on Jim, admit it now. This was the biggest pile of nonsense you’ve ever spouted.
October 22, 2008 at 14:16 #185841This year the Arc.winner had to beat the draw.As for why is this post in this section that was my mistake.Sorry about that.
October 22, 2008 at 19:02 #185888He breeds, owns and trains all of his own horses (well, with a few exceptions: Finsceal Beo, and the ones being poached for breeding rights) – very much a self-made man – and he’s the only one who can compete with O’Brien in terms of proper Group 1 horeses. Bolger has more big-race success than Godolphin, with all of their money and resources, and Stoute, etc, with all of his owners. It’s staggering really…
I know there was the Derby fiasco but I think Bolger comes across well in interviews. Maybe it’s his accent…

Agree, the Derby stuff was overdone by media the vast majority of which do not explain everything to the betting public.
Do you think there would have been a different perception of the matter if Bolger’s had a English Nortthern accent NWRA?
At least with Bolger training the good horses we are likely to see them race more often. Wish there were more like him.

Value Is EverythingOctober 24, 2008 at 01:06 #186097If the mark of a great trainer is maximising the wins out of a talented horse, i dare not mention finsceal Beo….

Come off it – the horse won a Dewhurst, a Derby, a Juddmonte and a Champion Stakes. No doubt that JB can train.
Reasonoverfaith – I think stating that New Aprroach wouldn’t run at Epsom will ALWAYS be the biggest piece of nonsense he’s spouted. Your quote was up there though.

.Breed and train he may be able to; to assume he knows how and where to race and place his horses in their best interests is an entirely different kettle of fish.
To lose 2 Guineas, a Juddmonte, and just survive against a listed class horse such as Traffic Guard for the lack of a pacemaker suggests he isn’t overbright when it comes to allowing his horses to achieve their optimum.
As a horse who showed his brilliantly best form over 12f, what possessed him to think he would be at his best in slowly run races over 2f shorter, or not to run him in the KG or the Arc? Would a trainer such as AoB have made the same mistakes? I very much doubt it.
Not to mention Clivex’s point about the complete balls he made of Finssceal Beo.

Brilliantly best form over 12 furlongs…. You mean the slowly run derby over that strange course.
Maybe the six furlong group ones would suggest he had pace enough not to be too botherd by 10 furlongs and pace makers in terms of pace. Your making the horse out to be too slow for anything under a mile and a half which is a bit bizarre looking over his career. I also thought the horse was suppose to be injured and not ready for a King George. In addition, Im convinced the champion stakes was something to do with Sheik Mohammed. In my opinion, he has done a pretty superb job with this horse.
Ill take your point on Finsceal Beo.
