A ‘Bolgerism’ –
Any act of forgetfulness which you surreptitiously employ to ensure that you are able to conveniently leave your options open such that you can manage to do something you’d previously promised you weren’t. (Another feature of a Bolgerism is that someone usually loses out as a result of your actions – not you of course)
Example –
You tell the wife you’re not going to the pub Saturday but you don’t phone your mates and tell them this news. So, the wife is gleefully unconcerned all week and life is sweet. Then, come Saturday, when your mates turn up at the door to pick you up en route to the pub you tell the wife you FORGOT to cancel the night out and trot off with the lads, have a great night out and everyone is happy.Oh, apart from the wife that is. She, like the ante-post punters, has been well and truly ‘Bolgered’.

Perhaps like the lengthening of pinocchio’s nose?!!!

June 9, 2008 at 14:33 #167547A disappointing thread.
June 9, 2008 at 16:46 #167584Is Jim Bolger in danger of taking the " most criticised trainer on the forum " crown from the great Martin Pipe?
June 9, 2008 at 16:50 #167587Have you forgotten one J.J.O’NEILL?

until we loose our antepost bets on the derby for the 3rd year running.. lost my faith in bolger last year so when new approach was a non runner supposedly i lumped on tartan bearer!
June 9, 2008 at 19:00 #167602Sorry CR and SHL – just trying to shed a little humour onto the situation. I clearly failed.
June 9, 2008 at 19:11 #167605Made me chuckle
June 9, 2008 at 19:22 #167607No problem corm, I’ve probably been mulling over the entire saga a bit too much myself this past few days. JB deserved to be pulled up in no uncertain terms over the racing issues involved but I think some of the personal abuse that the man has had to endure from certain sections of the media has been over the top and uncalled for.
June 9, 2008 at 19:55 #167613Couldn’t agree more. The guy has trained a horse to finish second in two classics and has won the Epsom Derby somethingmany trainers can only dream about. I haven’t been posting much simply because half the forum is being taken up by moans about parades and erors in entries.
In racing as a punter you put down your money and take your chances.
One thing I have learned which many people seem to be totally unaware of is that it is not a case of a traner not giving a rats ass about the punter. The punter simply does not enter a trainers mind when he is making a decision on whether a horse will or will not run in a race. They have a lot more to worry about than Joe Bloggs having his 100 quid on.
I never thought much of New Approach but I now think he might just be a very special horse which is great for racing.
To be honest I couldn’t care less who trains him and I wouldn’t know Jim Bolger if he jumped up and bit me.
I would rather concentrate on what the horse is going to do next and look forward to watching him again than worry if some horse sweated up while he was waiting for New Approach to get to the start.
All this Bolger said this Bolger did that is for sweetie wives in my opinion
June 9, 2008 at 21:09 #167622I don’t say this very often but I think Fist is spot on in this one
June 9, 2008 at 21:15 #167623The punter simply does not enter a trainers mind when he is making a decision on whether a horse will or will not run in a race.
the punter will soon enter his head if they desert the sport in droves because they are pissed around and treated with contempt
The trainer would then wonder why there is fck all prize money and owners cant be found
Shortsightedness and a complete disregard for what is effectively the sports client is almost autistic business behaviour
The tough time hes had from the media will hopefully remind trainers of their responsibilities. Even the thickest footballer knows that his living is not down to the owner of the club exclusively but down to the existence of the fans
Its nothing personal against bolger (whos a seemingly decent fellow otherwise), but its a strong example of what shouldnt be occuring in a sport with enough image problems as it is

YEAH BUT NOBODY IS GOING TO RUN AWAY FROM THE SPORT BECAUSE OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS SO THIS IS A PILE OF CRAP REALLY. HORSES NOT RUNNING OFTEN ENOUGH OR AVOIDING EACH OTHER FOR THE SAKE OF STUD VALUE, NOW THATS WHAT ALLOWS JOE PUBLIC TO SWITCH ON ANOTHER CHANNEL. I THINK THE SPORT, IF IT HAS PROBLEMS ARE FAR BIGGER THAN WHETHER JIM BOLGER HAS A WAY WITH WORDS OR NOT YET WE REGULARLY SEEM TO GET THIS TOSH TROTTED OUT THAT IF A TRAINER ISNT HOGGING THE LIMELIGHT AND MAKING US ALL FEEL SOMEHOW SPECIAL THAN, THEY ARE DAMAGEING THE SPORT.
I DONT KNOW MANY PEOPLE WHO EVER FOUND RON DENNIS OR THAT FERRARI GUY WHOS NAME ESCAPES ME AS CUDDLY YET NO BODY WAS SUGGESTING THEY WERE BAD FOR MOTORRACING WERE THEY?
NOBODY SEEMS TO WORRY THAT A HALF A FOOTBALL TEAM INVOLVED TAPING THEMSELVES INVOLVED IN CERTAIN TYPES OF COOKING ACTIVITIES IN A HOTEL ROOM ARE HARMING THE VIEWERSHIP OF THE PREMIERSHIP?
WHY? CAUSE THEY ARE NOT. PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED PRIMARILY. THESE KIND OF CONTROVERSIES DO NO LONG TERM HARM.
