He tried to tell it how he saw it but things changed (well being of horse after running in two classic/Epsom going). He’s put his hand up about this.
In the bad old days a trainer wouldn’t have even told the press what he was thinking.
In Jim Bolger you’ve got a trainer who competes his horses regularly ie Finsceal Beo, often in England, and tries to tell it how it is.
Only ante-post punters – which are surely in the minority – were affected because from Sunday onwards your average day of race punter was aware that this horse was going to run. I don’t think the average racing fan would have even been aware of this story if the media hadn’t latched on to it with such force because they are mostly going to bet once the declarations/draw etc are announced.
All credit to Jim for getting him to the start in fine order and for Kevin Manning for giving him such a great ride. Let’s praise it as the fine and audacious training feat that it was and look forward to seeing him over here again soon.
June 10, 2008 at 02:47 #167643The punter simply does not enter a trainers mind when he is making a decision on whether a horse will or will not run in a race.
the punter will soon enter his head if they desert the sport in droves because they are pissed around and treated with contempt
The trainer would then wonder why there is fck all prize money and owners cant be found
Shortsightedness and a complete disregard for what is effectively the sports client is almost autistic business behaviour
The tough time hes had from the media will hopefully remind trainers of their responsibilities. Even the thickest footballer knows that his living is not down to the owner of the club exclusively but down to the existence of the fans
Its nothing personal against bolger (whos a seemingly decent fellow otherwise), but its a strong example of what shouldnt be occuring in a sport with enough image problems as it is
It’s not a deliberate thing on a trainers part Clive. They simply don’t waken up in the morning thinking "what should I do for the punter today" They have their priorities and unfortunately the punter simply isn’t one of them.
June 28, 2008 at 10:38 #8252Bolger says today there is less heat in NA’s foot. Is he getting his excuse ready if beaten?
June 28, 2008 at 10:48 #170486yes, of course, it is the done thing these days and if it wins, it won while less than 100% – they all talk more bollocks the more money is involved
June 28, 2008 at 11:30 #170494Given Bolger’s capacity for misleading comments I’d suggest anything he says publicly should be completely ignored. As we know from the Derby, where his credibility was completely blown out of the water, adopting any other approach (new or otherwise, arf, arf) can be expensive.
June 28, 2008 at 11:33 #170495Regardless of his history with the media, I think it’s a bit far-fetched to suggest that he’s concocted a story about NA being lame for some nefarious purpose- there are too many other people involved, not least his illustrious owners. Far more reasonable to suggest that JB doesn’t want any more flak from the press and has turned over a new leaf, communications-wise.
June 28, 2008 at 11:36 #170496Maybe he has just taken a look at the Eclipse and decided he would much rather run in that

Reading between the lines of his post Epsom comments I’d suggest he has, although he’s not likely to admit it anytime soon
A good thing nonetheless.June 28, 2008 at 13:15 #170532Bolger says today there is less heat in NA’s foot. Is he getting his excuse ready if beaten?
Its pretty fair to say that if New Approach is beaten he probably wasnt 100%, or something went wrong somewhere. The horse has al;ready proven himself to be a cut above his opposition. The irish derby is merely a conformation of that.
June 28, 2008 at 15:48 #170560Ain’t it great.
Jim Bolger is damned if he keeps punters informed, damned if he does not.
Punters should make up their minds.
Do they want Bolger to keep quiet abot the possible injury?
Say he kept quiet and then it transpired the horse had a bruised foot a couple of days beforehand. What would these same punters say then?

Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2008 at 17:02 #170586New Approach is worth a punt at the 6/4 on Betfair IMO. He’ll be shorter if he gets the all-clear tomorrow and money back if not.

Spot on Ginge
The trouble is there are too many prejudiced people who will condemn him whatever he says – even if he swore black was black they would still stick the knife in and question his motives.
June 28, 2008 at 17:45 #170603Hello,
The man goes to Church, with his immediate family, gandchildren and non runners, what the **** is wrong with that!

regards,
doyley

I wish he would have kept us punters informed about Finsceal Beo, drifted like a barge, and then the vet finds a problem after the race
June 28, 2008 at 22:23 #170637Im sure when New Approach romps home tomorrow, many punters will be glad of Bolger’s warning that he is carrying an injury. He’s such a caring and sharing bloke. I only wish Paul Nicholls was as forthcoming as Bolger.
To be honest though I actually like the bloke for being so unapologetically dodgy, whilst at the same time being an amazing trainer, just for the comments he generates on Ch4 racing chat.

Could it not be Finscael Beo got an injury in the race?
May be she drifted because those who remembered her three 1000 G’s last year recognise her form went downhill for three quick runs.
So it would not be surprising if she ran below form, not long after running at Ascot. Therefore she did not deserve to be as short in the market. Witness the drift.Ginge
Value Is EverythingJune 29, 2008 at 00:31 #170648Think he could have handled the New Approach/Epsom Derby situation well and was probably a little bit too brazen about the whole thing, but the media did blow it up, no doubt.
However, to now accuse the man of playing foul and concocting a story is ludicrous. I don’t really see what he gains from it.
Fair play to JB for keeping the public informed this time.
