Breeding is not an exact science.
Progeny could inherit his speed without his quirks.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysAugust 24, 2022 at 08:26 #1612391I would like to apologise for ever being amused by Blackbeard’s antics.
I would like to – but I can’t.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 24, 2022 at 09:16 #1612393Isn’t Blackbeard’s place at stud, possibly as soon as the end of this season, linked to what we were discussing last week?
O’Brien is clearly impressed how he has “loads of speed.” But if these speedy and temperamental horses are going to be stallions and the most favoured by breeders, the chances of horses staying 12 furlongs or further will diminish. Is that what we want to see?
I would prefer to see the traditional distances maintained but I do not see how the Derby can remain relevant if stallions like Blackbeard become dominant. I think we will see far fewer Guineas winners run at Epsom in future.

Very true, Purwell.
But nobody knows whether the progeny will or will not inherit the quirks and therefore a higher probability of getting a temperamental racehorse would need to be allowed for in the stud fee. The more temperamental a horse is the more likely it is to show poor and / or inconsistent form. Can’t imagine Coolmore themselves wanting to send too many of their own mares to Blackbeard if even 10% turn out to be temperamental duds.Breeding from Blackbeard may be a nightmare for stalls handlers if only a fraction of his progeny show the same trait.

Sprint sires won’t “become dominent”.
There have been sprint sires through the ages without being detrimental to The Derby.Value Is EverythingAugust 25, 2022 at 15:54 #1612497“Sprint sires won’t ‘become dominent’.
There have been sprint sires through the ages without being detrimental to The Derby.”Whether or not sprint sires become a detriment to The Derby is not the real issue. My understanding of the real issue mentioned above is that given the focus by breeders on speed in recent years, there will be “far fewer Guineas winners” running in The Derby. In my view, that’s a very valid argument; i.e. more emphasis will be placed on winning the Guineas than on winning The Derby (not both)…
August 25, 2022 at 16:00 #1612498Well I plan on sending all my mares to Blackbeard.
Even if the progeny are no good on the racecourse, I can hire them out for archaeological digs.

August 25, 2022 at 16:15 #1612501“More emphasis will be placed on winning the Guineas than on winning The Derby (not both)…”
I believe that is already happening. When Jim Bolger trained the winner last year, he described the Guineas as the best race in the world or words to that effect. He clearly valued it above the Derby anyway.
August 25, 2022 at 16:55 #1612504All dependant on what mares he gets sent as they are usually the biggest influence of offspring.
Oasis Dream was champion sprinter yet his best progeny in terms of prize money and wins at the top level was 6 time G1 winning mare Midday who was a 10-12F performer.
Pivotal another champion sprinter and his most successful offspring is 10F horse Addeybb and he was also the sire of dual Oaks winner Sariska (who herself had some bigger ‘issues’ which unlike Blackbeard manifested themselves at the start of races not before).
I doubt the Derby in of itself will lose its place in prestige especially given that it is (and always will be) the truest ultimate test of a racehorse with regards to needing a unique blend of speed/stamina/balance/adaptability but the older fashioned 12F horses are fewer and further between.
The Derby and the Arc are really the only 12F races that breeders would be looking for on the CV of a potential stallion as the King George has somewhat fallen by the wayside – however, the beau ideal for breeding would be a horses that can win at the top level from 8-10F and has won either the Derby and/or the Arc.
That being said Sea The Stars ticked all of those boxes and whilst very successful as a stallion, he hasn’t become a champion sire and until Baaeed came along his most successful offspring have been horses that stayed very well with the likes of Crystal Ocean, Stradivarius & Taghrooda etc
Breeding is clearly not an exact science with Frankel being a prime example – his full brothers and sisters range from the very good 3 time G1 winner Noble Mission, to Proconsul who only made it to the track twice and Chiasma who has 1 Class 5 win to her name and has been beaten a total of 28L in her four other races.
August 25, 2022 at 19:17 #1612511I don’t think Blackbeard has to become dominant as a sire. Would you knock points off Blackbeard’s sire for producing such a nut job? Probably not as Little Big Bear looks as professional as they come.
Anyway vote Blackbeard for flat horse of the year in partnership with vote A in the gamble thread ❤️

September 25, 2022 at 01:13 #1615784He’s as good as gold going to post and coming home in tbe winners enclosure, it’s just madness, like he’s trying to psych out the competitors.
The Antarctic who was 2nd and unbelievably full brother to Battaash also gave us some pre race antics goosestepping his way to post. The horses must be watching the land of silly walks down there at Coolmore.😅🤣

Not to be outdone stable companion The Antarctic hogs the limelight for a while going to post.
