What betting shops in Birmingham do you frequent on a regular basis – I might just pop along and see if anyone has heard of you?
The earlier post read, “the ones I have frequented in Birmingham and currently Herts and Bucks”, so you’ll have to schlepp a little further down the country if you do feel duty bound to conduct this particular straw poll.
I’m not sure why anyone in any bookies would have “heard” of me – I talk plenty, but am still ultimately A N Other Regular Punter at several establishments at once.
I think it only fair to report that I have never yet burst into a bookies, mike in hand, and blurted, “Hi! I’m racing media nonentity Jeremy Grayson. You know, off of some newspapers and that. Let’s talk sport!!” I hope this revelation doesn’t disappointment too many.
I have been on this forum a few months and I haven’t come across any of your previous comments in respect of betting shop punters and on a few threads where betting shop punters have been rubbished I certainly haven’t noticed you championing their cause.
It’s touching to learn that so much time and effort has been invested in reading my posts. I’ve long coveted an obsessive fan.
I’m going to be very heavily immersed in all things Cheltenham Festival in six weeks’ time, yet I haven’t posted anything on at least half of the threads relating to that event and its likely protagonists, either. By the same logic as the above, presumably that negates the value of the select comments I have chosen to post. Duly noted.

I must say, I love the picture you paint of bursting into that betting-shop.

January 25, 2008 at 21:17 #137724Hi GC, does having an obsessive fan mean you are now a celebrity? If so can I have your autograph? I must admit I’m not going to frame it and cherish it, (at least not for long,) I’m going to sell it for personal gain on ebay. (Perhaps I should have left that last bit out.)
January 25, 2008 at 21:51 #137727Mansun may have been something of a fool but he was right about the childish clique that exists on here. Other than the competitions that’s my last post.
January 25, 2008 at 21:57 #137729Doesn’t one feel it is much classier to leave a forum without announcing it and flouncing off stage left?

Fight the good fight Stilvi
The iconoclast is welcome in a little world where servile idolatry reigns
January 25, 2008 at 22:36 #137737On my occasional visits to the Corals at Five Ways, Edgbaston, I do see a wide cross section of society. The colour of people’s skin or the particular arrangement of their genitalia doesn’t seem a barrier when it comes to screaming expletives at a bank of television screens. In fact, it is an environment that could only be enhanced by the presence of a point to point expert with an unusual record collection, particularly if he was to launch into the Alan Partridge impersonation described above.

"I backed a winner…of that, there is no doubt!!"
"SPLAT!!!! Did you see that?!?!?"
"Look at Denman! Hooves like a traction engine!"
etc.

January 26, 2008 at 01:59 #137811Dare I say a world where their allocation of ethnic minorities is pretty poor!
That does not mean anyone should go out of their way to find any. The same with women broadcasters. Ideally everyone should be there on merit.
The number of black racegoers is very small so it is hardly surprising the lack of broadcasters.
Stilvi – let’s deal with what you said (ABOVE).
You say that there are not many black racegoers – this is prob true, but I do not think it has any relevance to having X amount of non white broadcasters.
Are you going to refuse a minority "over" representation because there are not enough of them in the industry to justify their presence in the first place?
Can you please confirm whether or not you consider people in betting shops as part of the industry?
If you do not, fair enough, but I disagree with you.
AP – fair points – but I believe Newmarket has already staged a race that no one bets on – called the "Challenge Whip!"….I’m sure the BHB have plenty more of those in the locker:)
Would it be in British racing’s interest to be dependent solely on a powerful benefactor such as Sheikh Mohammed?
