Sorry to hear that Zarkava, did anyone catch the punter who was done over by Betfred in today’s Racing Post.
May 19, 2011 at 09:30 #356065Was in Betfred earlier. Had just £20 on me, unfortunately lost on Mundana (will win next time out). Asked the cashier for cash – she said I could only place bets using my card, couldn’t get cash back and the bet would have to be done 10 (!!!!) minutes before the race. Surprise surprise I left and didn’t go back.
Won’t be going back there in a hurry…
As I think I’ve already said, I use Betfred quite often and have no problems with the one I use. I think stories like this are similar for every High Street bookie; one day it will be William Hill, the next day it will be Ladbrokes, the next day Betfred etc.
As for Betfred, they do give cashback (so again, another example of a customer service op not knowing their job perhaps), but regarding the 10 minutes before the race I think that’s the same for every shop, or at least it used to be because I’ve recently seen an advert saying bets using a card must be placed five minutes before the off (can’t remember which shop). But I certainly wouldn’t hold this rule against a particular shop; it’s just policy.

Zarkava, maybe I’m mistaken but I thought according to this earlier post from you

Betfred are now open until 10pm on Sundays. Either they’ve followed Ladbrokes in doing so or Ladbrokes are following them.
Subsequently Coral are doing the same. Disgusting. Working in a bookies is becoming a 24/7 job.
That you worked in Betfred, in which case you can’t bet there too.
May 19, 2011 at 19:18 #356143Work for Coral, 2 1/2 months more of hell. And I can bet with them, online.

Paying by card has never been an issue for me in any betting shop. This was the first occasion I’ve heard anything like this.

Really? And you work in a Coral shop?
Is it a geographical thing then? Can’t for the life of me think why it would be.
But I can guarantee Zarkava that my local Coral have a sign in their shop, on the wall behind the counter, saying that all card payments must be submitted 10 minutes before the race (might have now changed to five minutes as I said earlier).
So am I getting this corret (apologies if not)? You work in a Coral shop and you don’t have this rule? How can that be?
May 19, 2011 at 21:24 #356159The shocking thing about making people work all the hours God made is that is a key part of the infamous Milton Friedman’s neoliberal, economic policy of polarising the wealth of the country, to the absolute limit and beyond. Right into their own bank accounts.
Problem with that is that if you keep robbing the workers blind, they end up with no disposable income or even enough for the necessities, in many cases. Yet the corporations and their shareholders depend on the consumers continuing to buy – and buy ever more dross, if it comes to that, but that’s another story, isn’t it.
Did I say, "… to the absolute limit and beyond?" Well, it’s now beyond "beyond". They could get away with it as long as the thoroughly usurious credit bubble they created, in lieu of paying even half-proper wages was kind of functioning, but the Ponzi scheme had to stop one day, and stop it did.
Yet STILL they want to squeeze more blood out of a stone.
The people who have ruined the planet are not the financially naive public, but the thieves who run the show. And I don’t mean the politicians, but those who give them their orders. And they cannot stop themselves from rushing over the Gadarene cliff and taking us with them.
Perhaps this is not the best forum to express such truths. Or is, according to how truculent you feel about it!

I like this post. Too few ppl are aware they are being robbed blind every minute their eyes are open. The worker is the one being robbed the most, ever longer hours for ever lower pay and ever less respect, in order to pay ever increasing bills and ever rising prices. All in aid of the corporations chasing ever higher profit margins for ever lower outlay.
The format is unsustainable.May 19, 2011 at 22:58 #356172It is possibly that my shop’s in a well off area and has a decent ‘quality’ of customer and very high average stake. I have however worked in several other shops, including high streets in several places around London, and they also don’t have this rule. Strange.

My sincere apologies your first post give me the impression that you worked at Betfred.
Also didn’t know that you could bet with your own company even if it’s online.
I know you can’t bet over the counter, because seen local Ladbroke staff rushing to nearest William Hill to place bets on.
May 20, 2011 at 17:41 #356256I’ve never come across a sign saying payment by card has to be put on by such and such and time. But, I do wonder if it is a local thing based on a combination of how busy a shop is and the number of staff employed.
I appreciate that payment by chip and pin is relatively quick now days compared to what it used to be but if I was behind some bloke putting a bet on, a minute before the off with one staff on and he pulled out his card to pay I’m not sure I’d be too happy

Grimes, I can honestly say that in my entire working life no one has ever received a single penny in surplus value from me
