Was in Betfred today, placed a £25 ew bet on Line of Duty which duly won. The part were I walked up to the counter and handed over the ticket the bloke just stared at me and said I have no money, I said Ok do you know where the next Betfred shop is and he said no, does it look like we grow money just walk up the road and find another shop.
Had to walk 3 miles to next Betfred, he never rung up to check if they had money which when I got there they didn’t, luicky the lady managed to see how poorly the customer was treated and got some out the FOBT.
Should i report this fella? was shocked by his attitude and total hate in his voice.
Betfred are appauling.
May 11, 2011 at 19:20 #354986Betfred are now open until 10pm on Sundays. Either they’ve followed Ladbrokes in doing so or Ladbrokes are following them.
Subsequently Coral are doing the same. Disgusting. Working in a bookies is becoming a 24/7 job.
May 11, 2011 at 20:06 #354993In my local town the is a Ladbrokes, William Hill, Corals, Betfred & a recently opened Paddy Power.
Paddy Power does five places for the grand national, and other nationals so the local Betfred, 2 doors down, decides to do 5 places for the grand national as well, only a notice on the door says for this shop only.
Also in the past I’ve had poor service so rarely goes in these days and even rarer to bet there.

They soon took the stake, surely they have an obligation to have cash on hand to pay out on what is, lets face it, not a massive winning bet.
I’d report the guy for being an asshole and potentially losing a customer.May 11, 2011 at 21:02 #355002Betfred are now open until 10pm on Sundays. Either they’ve followed Ladbrokes in doing so or Ladbrokes are following them.

Oh yeah, it’s disgusting that high street shops open until late in the evening. I’ve heard a vicious rumour that Tesco are considering opening until 11.
How dare they?!

Every hour is amateur hour at Betfred.
To their credit they’ve always had enough cash on hand to pay me, but the trick is getting them to pay the right amount. Taking a price means absolutely nothing; they’ll settle at whatever price they want and then refuse to contact customer services to establish at what time the price supposedly changed.
There are two Betfred shops in my town centre, neither of which do much business (though that might have something to do with Ladbrokes and Coral having big shops within 70 yards and newly opened – within the last 6 weeks – branches of William Hill and Stan James).
Avoid like a Pipe-trained, Frost-ridden hurdler on its final start for a handicap mark.

I’m really angry by that comment, Anthony. I work in a bookmakers and thank goodness I’m off in 12 weeks else I’d be extremely angry about it.
I don’t know whether it’s entered that ignorant brain of yours, but there is no British or Irish racing on Sundays bar the afternoon stuff. The reason the bookmakers want to extend their hours from 6pm to 9.30pm is because of the FOBTs, the bain of the bookmaking world.
My area manager said to me the other day that he wants me to promote the new roulette game on the machine as it pays out on a percentage of 94.7% rather than 97.3%.
Yet you support their longer opening hours which affects nobody at the top and only the members of staff.

I know a lot of you don’t care about the workers in betting shops and shops but for the benefit of
Zarkava
the are laws proctecting your rights.
Shop-workers who started working for their employer before 26 August 1994 (6 April 2004 in Scotland; 4 December 1997 in Northern Ireland)
If you are a shop-worker, and you started working for your employer before 26 August 1994 (4 December 1997 in Northern Ireland) you are called a protected shop-worker. If you do not wish to work on Sundays you do not have to, and if your employer tries to dismiss you because you refuse to work on Sundays, you can automatically claim unfair dismissal at an employment tribunal (industrial tribunal in Northern Ireland). This is regardless of how long you have worked for your employer, of whether you work full-time or part-time and of how old you are.For more information, see Dismissal.
If you are a protected shop-worker you must not be treated unfairly by your employer because you do not wish to work on Sundays. If you are being treated unfairly by your employer because you do not wish to work on Sundays, you should consult an experienced adviser, for example, at a Citizens Advice Bureau. To search for details of your nearest CAB, including those that can give advice by email, click on nearest CAB.
The proper site also says it’s for betting shop workers too. If your employment started after this date, you can opt out. However it must be in writing and you must give them 12 weeks notice.
May 12, 2011 at 00:19 #355032Well we were told on Tuesday morning and I immediately started phoning round the other shops in the Home Counties region to find the other shops that are doing the same. Surprise surprise, every person I’ve spoken to is in favour of creating a union so I’ve gone to the union rep we’ll see what happens.
It’s purely because of the FOBTs. Every single shop I spoke to has a Betfred nearby. Our shop is actually in the middle of nowhere, 5 miles from the nearest competitor, but our FOBT turnover is so high that the changes apply to us as well.
The opting out of Sundays is an option that I mentioned to everybody but we’ll see what the union rep can get done first.

Surely they should have had enough money behind the counter to cover up to a grand, unless everyone in shop backed it.
If not he should have explained in a polite way that the money will be there tomorrow and informed his bosses.

A lot of shops don’t carry that kind of float, though they’d usually settle by cheque, if requested.
May 12, 2011 at 07:21 #355042Do High Street bookmakers still offer the option of payment by cheque for decent wins?
From personal experience both Hills and Ladbrokes were happy to do this on returns greater than around a monkey, particularly if you went in to collect your winnings the following morning when the safe was yet to bulge
edit:
crossed post RH, thanks for the confirmation
May 12, 2011 at 09:08 #355051Dreadful service Mr Wilson, but why did you just accept it?
Did you not think to ask him when he could get the money? The reason I say this is there should be at least two members of staff working during busy race times (the time when your horse won) – at least one of them in a managerial role with the authority to go to the bank and get the cash.
Failing that, he could have at least told you when they could get the money. Perhaps you did ask and you’ve just gave a very succinct description of what happened.
Also, did you not ask him to check where the next shop was? He may not have known, but he has access to a phone and Betfred’s head/main office number – someone would have been able to tell him where the nearest shop was.
I’m not disputing you received dreadful service, but I personally wouldn’t have stood for it and instead asked a few questions to get the answers required. If he says that he can’t get the money until tomorrow or the next day then fair enough, if he says he can find the nearest shop after a few phone calls then fair enough.
I’m amazed at anyone would just accept his poor service and go on their merry way.

Report him to whom? Surely not senior management? If you want to get him into Fred’s bad books, and maybe even disciplined, ring up Fred and tell him you were paid out promptly and without fuss and he even alerted you to a sleeper you’d forgotten about while doing so.
I could spend all morning telling you horror stories about getting this mob to pay up but I don’t have the time.
Suffice it to say, when I’m putting on a lucky 15 I walk past the Betfred shop claiming to offer quadruple odds to get my bet on with one of the bookies further down the street offering treble odds.
That is how bad they are!
May 12, 2011 at 22:21 #355167Zarkava: I don’t see what your problem is. A bookies opens til ten on Sundays & you’re on the rota to work, fair complaint.
But I work for a logistics company which has a three shift pattern. Some of the agency staff have been told they have to go onto permanent nights or they’ll lose their jobs.
As a youth I used to work for McDonalds. Which was open 24 hours on a Friday & Saturday night. I got more chips thrown on me than I actually served anyone.
And the Tescos down my road is open until midnight every day.
I can see why you might be annoyed but it’s not the worst the high street has to offer.
And don’t call me ignorant, it’s not you who has to tell people not to come to work anymore because sales have fallen through the floor.
May 12, 2011 at 22:37 #355170Yes, because McDonalds and such food retailers can offer a service for all. Nurishment. Food. People need food to survive.
What do FOBTs offer? A source for gambling addicts to get their fix. Bookmakers’ offices are basically drug havens. If someone were offering a house where people could smoke pot and shoot up, they’d be raided.
May 18, 2011 at 21:44 #356019Was in Betfred earlier. Had just £20 on me, unfortunately lost on Mundana (will win next time out). Asked the cashier for cash – she said I could only place bets using my card, couldn’t get cash back and the bet would have to be done 10 (!!!!) minutes before the race. Surprise surprise I left and didn’t go back.
Won’t be going back there in a hurry…
