This would be an interesting combination.

What planet are these people on – are they the same types that valued Betfair shares as a licence to print money at £15+ -yet another "sure-fire winner for investors".

Since when did they ever care a damn about "investors"?
Why do they not find out first the basics of what Betfair and Sportingbet actually do? Or have they some Sportingbet shares they cannot unload any other way?

Betfair are struggling to establish credibility in USA they certainly do not want to be associated with a firm whose chairman was arrested in USA.

The first two paragraphs are laughable:

"The possibility of Betfair entering into a merger with its small-cap peer Sportingbet was being mulled over yesterday, as City scribblers argued a tie-up between the two gambling groups would result in a sure-fire winner for investors.

Numis Securities’ Ivor Jones was the man behind the fantasy theory, with the analyst – who suggested "Fairly Sporting" as a name for the proposed group – claiming "a merger would create a better business than either company on its own". "
