I’m less than 20 miles south of Newbury racecourse and the prospects of rain between now and Saturday are remote in the extreme.

Newbury Saturday, from Racing Post this afters:

Newbury clerk of the course Keith Ottesen is confident the track will be fit for racing for its Betfair Super Saturday meeting this weekend.

Frost covers were deployed on Sunday as sub-zero temperatures were forecast to hit the area, and those sheets will remain in place until at least Friday.

Keith Ottesen “We’re not going to be any softer than good, but hopefully we can have as many runners. The main thing is that we look safe and sound for racing on Saturday.”

Harry Fry’s confirmed Gin Coco won’t run and goes straight to County Hurdle on his twitter…. I’d have thought he’ll be very close to not getting in off 135, 134 was bottom weight last year, saying that Belfast Banter won it the year before off 129 so he might be ok.

Can see this cutting right up to almost single figures if they do get it on, such a shame for a £87K prize for the winner but for a lot the ground won’t be suitable (not unsafe) and for others it’ll be all about Cheltenham.

Listen to your Uncle Chezza who resides less than 20 miles from the track.

    There’s been no rain.

There isn’t going to be any rain.

    They’re not allowed to water.

    They’re admitting to Good.

It’s going to be like a ROAD.

The Firmest ground for the Schweppes EVER.

Trainers will be pulling horses out after the first race or two.

Get on something that needs it like the adjacent A339.

Icare Allen and Onemorefortheroad for me. Icare Allen was involved in the Triumph Hurdle with Vauban, Pied Piper, Fil Dor and Il etait Temps. These horses all ran to ratings in the 150s in the last months. If Icare Allen can do that too, he must have a chance. And why couldn’t he do it. Traind by Willie and only six runs so far, so there should be room for improvement. Onemorefortheroad has course form here at Newbury and he dropped below his last winning mark. He is big price for that.

    Icare Allen 9/1
    Onemorefortheroad 33/1 EW

Ian’s mention of the A339 reminds me of the dodgy junction near Kingsclere that I used regularly back in the day. Crossed that road a good deal more often that I used it.

    Figures for this race:

    156 Icare Allen
    156 Rubaud
    154 Onemorefortheroad
    150 Teddy Blue
    149 Master Chewy
    148 No Ordinary Joe

Icare Allen’s figure is a best guess as I try to square up Irish handicap marks with GB marks over hurdles. There’s a significance difference of 1 pound lower in every 5 below 150 in Ireland. If a horse is 125 there it’s 130 here.

The one that catches my eye at a decent price is Onemorefortheroad – 33/1 each-way 1/5 odds 5 places who needs good ground or near it to be at his best. Although recent form is patchy he’s back to his last winning mark now and has his conditions.

I’m 15 minutes from Kingsclere, Rob.

If the ground is as quick as I think it might be, Highway One O Two’s Ascot victory might assume greater relevance.

30 at Betfair Exchange seems quite fair to me – and may go bigger still as it seems I’m the only person in the land who thinks he has a chance.

Highway One O Two was also “only” 24 lengths behind Constitution Hill which will put the horse on a par with State Man after the Champion Hurdle is run
