What would yours be?
Black Caviar’s win had everything for me. Build up over months, excitement on the day. Ascot was buzzing that day in anticipation. Then the race, filled with drama, and the result.
Not only my favourite Ascot memory, just about my favourite racing memory full stop.
June 12, 2017 at 23:22 #1304167I am generally not a massive fan of how Godolphin run their operation but I have to say that Dubai Millenium’s Prince Of Wales’ victory in 2000 really was a bit special. That was some racehorse and some performance.

Never mind who owns the horse, that were two very good perfomances from top racehorses, but I do like the Worlds Best racehorses Ascot performance, Frankels annihilation of the opposition in the Queen Anne https://youtu.be/C-t_gbpGZ2k

SilkJune 13, 2017 at 08:17 #1304176For the absolute fearlessness of the coup, I’d have to say Laddies Poker Two winning the 2010 Wokingham. She was a notoriously unsound filly, but still hammered into a ridiculous 9/2 for a race so competitive. Given a ballsy hold-up ride by Johnny Murtagh, weaved around to get through the pack, sprinted to the front and won a touch cosily in the end. Incredible.
June 13, 2017 at 12:56 #1304188Have to say, the Ascot Gold Cup of 2013 was very good. Johnny Murtagh, in the last year of his racing career, as usual, is brilliant at Royal Ascot, and won races for various trainers. He was within a nose of winning the Gold Cup for Mullins with Simenon. The English fawned and fell over themselves in superlatives with HRM The Queen’s filly running a blinder
2014 edition had some drama. The build up was pretty good. You had Estimate back for more, the question about whether St Leger Winner Leading Light become another Yeats, and a relatively unknown dual purpose trainer from Cork suggesting that he would offer ham to The Queen from the English Markets in Cork if his wonderful filly won. (The Queen had made her historic visit to Ireland at that point). Missunited ran brilliantly but it set it up for the other two fine stayers . It was one of Joseph O’Brien’s finest moments in the saddle in my opinion.
The Sprints tend to be great drama. In 2013 you had Willy Sole Power going head to head with Shea Shea again after Meydan but I think his 2014 win was much more impressive (and his Nunthrope
) Lynam and the Power family doing the double in 2014 was great too.June 13, 2017 at 14:04 #1304195I don’t know if these will qualify as the best races, but the races I immediately thought of was Yeats winning his fourth Ascot Gold Cup, that was special, or for that fleeting moment I thought Persian Punch was going to win it as well. Sadly Mr Dinos was too strong.

I’d have to agree, Yeats winning his fourth Gold Cup was something special.
June 13, 2017 at 14:22 #1304199Yes voleur, i don’t get too carried away with the horses much these days, but that day was something else.
June 13, 2017 at 14:52 #1304202Are you not thinking of Persian Punch’s epic dual with Royal Rebel, buckers when he was beaten a neck after trying to run the field ragged? He was second to Mr Dinos two years later but was beaten 6 lengths.
Always loved the gold cup particularly Yeats 4th win.
June 13, 2017 at 17:24 #1304211The Queens Gold Cup winner has to be up there.
June 13, 2017 at 17:34 #1304212When I read this , the first race which came immediately to mind was the infamous 1981 St.James Palace Stakes grudge match between To-Agori-Mou and King’s Lake , where the former won and Greville Starkey gave Pat Eddery the “V” sign because of the controversial way in which his mount had been disqualified in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the expense of Eddery’s King’s Lake . Part 2 in the on going drama between the pair , which would see Eddery and King’s Lake gain revenge in the Sussex Stakes . It was riveting viewing watching those two great milers and two great jockeys lock horns .
Other memorable Royal Ascot races which stand out for me were the 1980 Ascot Gold Cup , when the great Le Moss beat Ardross , and again , another Ascot Gold Cup in 1988 ; this time probably the most controversial : Sadeem being awarded the race after easy winner , Royal Gait , was unjustly thrown out .

June 13, 2017 at 18:15 #1304215I don’t know about the best ever race at Royal Ascot but my personal favourite was Canford Cliffs beating Goldikova in the Queen Anne
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 13, 2017 at 18:26 #1304216I’ll throw in something different: Precocious in the 1983 Norfolk Stakes. Easiest winner I’ve ever seen at the Royal meeting.
Chief Singer’s explosive debut in the same year’s Coventry will also live long in the memory.
June 13, 2017 at 18:30 #1304217It will be no surprise to anyone…. Frankel’s 11 length demolition in the Queen Anne. Some might remember I backed “more than 10 lengths” at 10-1. I still have the race on my phone – I’m in the stands screaming “Further!!! Further!!! Further!!!” It was the most awesome display by a thoroughbred that I ever saw.
My WORST one was Royal Anthem losing the Hardwicke in about 1999. I was a penniless actor and had £500 left to pay my rent. I was absolutely convinced that I was literally BUYING money as I had heard how much Cecil thought of him. So I put the lot on him. Sure enough he hit the front 2 out and I thought my money was safe. Then that bloody Fruits Of Love came from nowhere and wore him down in the last half furlong. It was a sickening feeling I’ll never forget. I’ve never gambled beyond my means since so I suppose it was a good lesson….
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"

Hi Paul, for once old age isn’t making me confused, and it was that defeat to Mr Dinos I was thinking of. Although I love both codes equally, it is not as often that you get that attachment with horses on the flat as you do over jumps, but I did have it with Persian, and had talked myself into defeat being out of the question that year, but alas it was just not to be.
June 13, 2017 at 22:57 #1304249Most unusual I have witnessed was the 1974 Queen Anne Stakes. The first 3 were
disqualified, Confusion – appropriately, Royal Perogative and Gloss. A very rare
occurrence and I would imagine unique at Royal Ascot. Also, take into account this was for interference and not taking the wrong course.June 13, 2017 at 23:13 #1304252For me Frankel & Lady Aurelia for their sheer jaw dropping performance but for an entirely emotional reason and on the same day watching/willing on The Queen’s Estimate to win the Gold Cup and Riposte to win the Ribblesdale for Lady Cecil just over a week after Sir Henry’s death elevated both races.
