Interesting that you don’t rate The Listener much. His last two runs have proven to me he is a top-class chaser given his conditions.
Really don’t think that McNamara could have done anything else, The Listener was taking lengths out of them at every obstacle. It wasn’t a case of giving him too much to do, moreso that Beef or Salmon couldn’t lie up with The Listener.
February 10, 2007 at 20:16 #28821Beef again proved what a moneyspinner he is on softish ground in a small field event in Ireland.
He was unable to lay up with his only serious rival, The Listener, who jumped superbly.
This is why Beef is not a force on better ground in the UK, exacerbated because he is not the most fluent jumper.
However The Listener ran out of gas and was caught close home. Jacob realised this was happening and looked over his shoulder a couple of times- he was not caught napping. If he’d kicked on earlier he’d have emptied earlier. What do people want- Andrew Thornton back on board?
February 10, 2007 at 21:10 #28822Full marks to BOS, what a tough old bugger he is.
Shame he hates travelling.

February 11, 2007 at 02:40 #28824BOS should never have won.A clear case of jockey error on the runner up :(

The way both horses ran, in both races, indicate that yesterday’s race was much more of a slog than their previous meeting.
In the Lexus, The Listener was able to clear away from his field from 2 out, with BoS never nearer than at the finish. Much the same scenario yesterday, until approaching the last fence where BoS utilised his stamina to get back in it.
Maybe some problem will emerge with The Listener; more likely is that he is a horse who runs better fresh, but the only way the result could have been reversed yesterday was if his jockey had held on to him longer entering the final circuit, thus conserving the energy which he had patently expended in yesterday’s closing stages.
A top class jockey might have managed it, but there is no way, imo, that his jockey could be faulted in the closing stages of this race.
February 11, 2007 at 09:48 #28826How about BOS for the Irish National, I think Beef is slowly in decline, he doesnt tank along on the bridle anymore and win with his head in his chest like most of his other Grade 1 victories, when he beat War of Attrition same as yesterday he kept just plugging away his undoubted class getting him home each time.
3m 5 around Fairyhouse would be right up his street, even if he would probably be shouldered with top weight, he couldnt win at Cheltenham at his very best he is definetly not going to win now. I suppose from the Trainer and Owners point of view he has nothing to lose so why not, he was never a cotton wool horse.
An ASBO is likely to be pushed through my letterbox on Monday morning such was the noise I was making in that final furlong.
Same here! My GOD what a win! I don’t think I’ve seen anything so amazing for……..oooooo….ages! I had tears in my eyes after that, what a horse!

RPR have awarded BoS a rating of 172 for this race, which I find absurd.
The only way they could possibly justify this figure is to have The Listener running to the same figure he achieved in the Lexus – which they have.
This suggests that BoS improved his rating by 8lbs+ on any previous run this season; for an 11yo previously on a gentle downgrade, that is surely preposterous?
February 12, 2007 at 10:16 #28829RPR have lost the plot. Listener went off too fast this time, and also Mac didn’t let him get quite as far infront. I reckon BoS is getting a bit lazy in his old age and its only once he gets a few cracks that you seem him move up a gear. I lumped on at 7/2 so was delighted. Still cant see either getting close to Kauto (unless of course he falls)

Its total nonsense isnt it?
the listener emptied out so how could have run to the same figure
Sentiment getting in the way of analysis….

THats incorrect actually…in his earlier career he ran over shorter distances against very decent horses. For my money, his jumping got worse and it was during the race against Edredon blue in clonmel, that we first saw the really awkward style of slow jumping that limited anything that has happend since. He is very tough though and if it wasnt racing pace at leopardstown by the way, why did the listener get tired? We know the old boy is a bit limited now but he deserves great credit.

February 12, 2007 at 11:02 #28832RPR seems to have lost the plot recently, giving extra lbs for bad jumps etc and they were very conservative regarding Well Chiefs win.
February 12, 2007 at 11:04 #28833The listener seemed to get an easier lead in the Lexus I think. I agree about the ratings by the way, but ****
it…..its only a number.SHL
