Rip
I wiil leave others to post tributes..
May 23, 2021 at 19:25 #154198281. A surprise
I thought he was 81 thirty years ago
May 23, 2021 at 19:34 #1541983Very sad to hear. I only read Nick Townsend’s book about him a few weeks ago and then I watched the interview he gave Nick Luck. And who could forget his encounter with Luke Harvey and John McCririck?
May 23, 2021 at 19:47 #1541984May 23, 2021 at 22:21 #1542000Barney was a big @rsed gambler. It’s a dying breed – well the successful ones who could curl a few in in a sequence like Barney could. Left the rest of us on bread and water, but never mind – history always has its winners and losers. RIP
May 23, 2021 at 22:32 #1542002Can’t decide whether Curley was a force for good or not.
Value Is EverythingMay 23, 2021 at 22:35 #1542003Its Sunday – go for good, and remember tipster, the dead can’t answer back, so more than most, they deserve the benefit of your doubt.
May 23, 2021 at 23:43 #1542007Can just see McCririck and Barney Curley carrying on that rant above Yeats. There’ll be thunder and lightning for a few weeks to come.
Barney Curley was a character who even the great Dick Francis would have struggled to get to the bottom off.. RIP.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 24, 2021 at 00:50 #1542013Barney did his own thing and often started the big gambles, some successful some not.
R.I.P

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.May 24, 2021 at 02:11 #1542016A remarkable man but, in terms of a force for good or not, it’s worth pointing out, I think, that when a betting coup is landed it’s not just the bookmakers who lose.
It’s also every punter who made the schoolboy error of using a form book to try to find the winner of the race in question.
He was no friend to punters.
RIP nonetheless.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 24, 2021 at 06:32 #1542017Look at what he did in Africa , he was indeed a force for good , his bio is def worth a a read , shows what a complex man that he was , from a racing point of view outwith the punting side he dealt out a lot of much needed advice …. one Frankie Dettori was put back on the straight and narrow after a night of snooker and home truths ….and how did Frankie get his house ….
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
May 24, 2021 at 10:02 #1542021Completely agree with HDLG. Curley did plenty good, and I liked his attempts (and successes) over the enemy. RIP Barney.
BUY THE SUN
May 24, 2021 at 10:47 #1542030The bookmakers aren’t the enemy – other punters are the enemy.
It’s dog eat dog among them for the biggest share of the pay-out pie.
And since the Betfair exchange arrived fully 20 years ago, the phoney war between bookie and punter has never been more apparent.

No, am not going to be so two faced, gamble.
Never understood why when someone dies we must all totally ignore everything that person may have done wrong and only talk about the right. Suspect his own concience got little rest. The Mafia did plenty of good things for the needy too. Improving their image amongst their people and / or making them feel better about themselves when knowing what wrongs they’ve done in other “fields”.
RIP nonetheless
Value Is EverythingMay 24, 2021 at 11:28 #1542037Must say I agree with Gingertipster.
Maybe he made mugs of the bookies, but he also made mugs of every punter who thought they were betting on a race where the form book was an accurate guide.
But hey, he did charity work – and made sure everyone knew about it – so that makes it all alright, then.
I need to read his biography like I need a dose of the Covid, so I think I will pass on that.
He was a right character – and RIP, obviously – but any punter who idolises him needs to check into Okehampton Funny Farm (old Goodies joke) for a prolonged stay!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 24, 2021 at 11:31 #1542038I agree with Ian. He certainly was no friend of punters
Some would say he was a miserable sanctimonious self regarding po faced c***
but I wouldn’t comment
May 24, 2021 at 11:33 #1542039He called McCririck a “take out merchant” which always struck me as a bit ironic seeing as, with his net Levy yield-reducing gambles, Barney Curley was one of the biggest “take-out merchants” the racing game has ever seen.
