Forgive the after timing but I had a few quid on the winner so maybe it’s hard for me to be objective!

I just think Kamako was a non stayer and English King got a rare poor ride from the usually excellent Frankie Dettori, but wasn’t good enough anyway.

I’ll help your objectivity then Ian, Serpentine was not the best horse in the race. He won due to race tactics. If Listen and The Lads had held him up and sent another one forward, the placings would have been reversed.

What seperates a “legitimate betting coup” from an illegitimate one? In your all seeing eyes?

And who judges “validity” GT? Which valid coups are you referring to?

    Thanks for your help!

But IMO Sea-Bird, Mill Reef, Sea The Stars, Shergar or Generous would have gone their own pace, sat where they wanted and picked off Serpentine with ease the last 3f.

The Peleton simply dominated a poor Derby.

The best horse does not always win, the best horse – with all the advantages of how the race was run – won the race. Last year’s Derby was all about pace. Nothing to do with Coolmore making a joke of the race, if you must blame anyone then blame the jockeys of those following the leader / winner. Personally, I was kicking myself for not backing the winner, as pace / sectional analysis beforehand would have suggested Serpentine had a bigger chance than odds implied.

Obviously the individual judges validity, but with some betting coups it’s hard for anyone to find validity.

Sounds like it is OK to land a coup as long as you are not Barney Curley.

Why are any of Curley’s coups “invalid”? What rules has he broken? As far as I am aware, he was paid out on them all. Would that have happened if they were invalid?

To be honest, IMO if the rules of racing were actually enforced Barney Curley would have been warned off years ago for the conspicuously phenomenal amounts of improvement his coup horses found on similar ground over similar distances and he wouldn’t have been the only one by any means.

But your average Steward knows more about Port than he does about racing and on both sides of the Irish Sea they would rather pick on a horse who drifts from 33/1 to 200/1, with not one penny of punters’ cash on it, before getting an easy for some unknown trainer and claimer who get the wrath of God descend upon them.

Racing’s rulers do love a soft target for their all-too-occasional muscle flexing.

Don’t want to get the forum in trouble CAS, so I’ll keep it simple and say any coup where – as a result -someone has got warned off is “invalid”… And imo there were other cases too.

To those who think Curley is a wrongun, you really need to ask yourself what you would do if you were given the heads up on one of his gambles.

If you would lump on, you are a hypocrite.

If you wouldn’t, you are a fool!
