Much as I like this competition ATR run I don’t vote because of part 8. in the T and C shown here:-
“8. The participant consents to the use of their name, voice, photographs and/or other likenesses for advertising or publicity purposes without additional compensation”.However, I do like to pontificate on the outcome, and this week I thought some are exceptional, would you say so too?
I completely disagree with Thommo who said that Mattie Batchelor rode a “power packed finish” on King Harald…he only had to sit there from the final fence. My choice would be Chris Catlin as his sterling effort got that horse up,
Robert Thornton for the same reason, a close second.
Some of the others I thought the horse got there without the jockey having to do quite so much. Whatever, these sort of rides demonstrate the absurdity in any suggestion that using the whip should be banned. Horse racing would be nothing without it.MATTIE BATCHELOR (King Harald) – Doncaster, Saturday
CHRIS CATLIN (Sophia Gardens) – Southwell, Tuesday
ROBERT THORNTON (The Hairy Lemon) – Taunton, Tuesday
RUBY WALSH (Iroquois Warrior) – Taunton, Tuesday
TOLLY DEAN (Ebraam) – Lingfield, Saturday
MARK BRADBURNE (Sir Peter) – Towcester, ThursdayFebruary 4, 2008 at 16:38 #140147No, I don’t agree with that. His horse made a mistake before the home turn, got him back in contention and every chance run in.
Just thought Thornton rode a better finish on a horse that had just a little more to give, but I’ve always preferred Thornton in any case to Murphy but I didn’t think the latter did that much wrong.February 4, 2008 at 16:45 #140152Doug Costello never gave up for a moment despite looking well beat going to the last on Leslingtaylor. He just kept digging knowing there was every chance Tidal Bay could make another blunder………great piece of thinking plus he got every ounce out of the horse to get him up on the line. Excellent ride
February 4, 2008 at 20:52 #140238yes Fury he didn’t give up so all credit there where it’s due…didn’t seem to panic at all.. I was delighted by the win of Leslingtaylor, especially as the son of the owner often writes on another forum and stated that he thought it had a good chance and would run well on this better ground.
He comes across as a pleasant sort of gentleman who looks after his mother very well I imagine.
Surprised they didn’t put this one forward but perhaps considered it a lucky winner.
February 4, 2008 at 22:18 #140261Hi Fist
Can you get ATR and RUK in Thailand ?February 5, 2008 at 00:08 #140283I wish they’d choose a real ride instead of just a jockey getting the whip out like he’s beating a carpet every once in a while.
February 5, 2008 at 03:19 #140295I’d say that a real example of a great ride is where a jockey uses great skills and gets a horse over the line that didn’t want to win.
Example A – A couple of years ago Ruby on Almost Broke at Wincanton in a decent handicap chase and he beat Dunbrody Millar if my memory serves me correctly. The horse basically refused to go to the lead and Ruby produced him with about 10 cm to go before the post to get him over the line.
Flagellation of the equine to the point where it hates life is not in my opinion the epitome of a great ride. Whip me if I’m wrong.
