Assert – 4 Group 1s?

Wikipedia says Assert won 4 Group 1s; I remember the French Derby, the Irish Derby, and the Benson and Hedges at York. What was the fourth?

Thanks for that, I have no recall of that race whatsoever. who did he beat?

The race was run at Leopardstown on September 18, 1982. Assert went off the 1/4 favourite and won by three lengths from Kind Of Hush (B Hills/S Cauthen). Punctilio (M V O’Brien/P Eddery) was a length and a half further away in third. Stanerra was fourth.

I should have mentioned that Christy Roche rode the winner who was, of course, trained by David O’Brien.

I was at Leopardstown when Golden Fleece beat Assert in April of that year. Even then their star quality was evident; Assert was a beautiful mover and Golden Fleece was simply the most impressive individual I’ve ever seen. It’s a shame his career was curtailed, he could have been one of the greats.
