Apologies for intruding upon the P-T-P love-in, but did anybody else think the commentary on the Kentucky Derby was dreadful?
Tom Durkin only gets around to mentioning MINE THAT BIRD when that horse has gone three lengths in front. And even at that he sounds hesitant and momentarily unsure of the name.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv8x9x5A49s
(it would be interesting to hear Craig’s professional opinion on the matter).
FIrstly, Mark did a great job on the track and is proving the naysayers wrong.
I have called (though not as the Track Announcer) from Tom Durkin’s position at Churchill Downs. The Commentary box juts out almost on to the track itself, calling them from the quarter pole to the furlong marker, one is looking at them almost head-on and the monitor in Tom’s position is behind him and probably ten feet away, so he has to turn his back on the field.
I do not know why but Tom has not called much this spring and to me he just sounded rusty throughout. He stumbled over his words at the start and stumbled a little in the mid division as well.
We all have bad days, Tom was just unlucky this time. But Mark Johnson gave an excellent call.

May 5, 2009 at 23:09 #225852I was mostly annoyed that a broadcaster which does expect its booth-sitters to gen up sufficiently on, say, the form of the overseas action it covers into the evening, wouldn’t accord some of its native coverage the same basic courtesy. That would have held true whoever it was on duty tonight if they’d given the same performance.
…and after the brickbats, the bouquets. Tony Ennis had clearly done his homework ahead of tonight’s Intermediate hunter chase final at Exeter and delivered a spot-on commentary. Nice work, fella!
With Mark Johnson otherwise detained in the States, I wonder who’s going to call them home at Chelters tomorrow night.

Hope it’s not the geezer who did Fakenham yesterday, he was dreadful.
May 6, 2009 at 11:43 #225934I believe that was Iain Mckenzie who hasn’t been his usual self the last few times I’ve heard him race-call.

May 6, 2009 at 13:01 #225948Ach, I’m sure he’ll warm to the task if it’s him this evening. And if it isn’t, then he’ll be bang on the money at Cartmel.

May 6, 2009 at 13:50 #225952First time I’d recognised Enzo as a race commentator, was last night at Exeter and at the time I was not only impressed but also amazed at his clear, accurate, concise speed of delivery, omitting waffle and wrong calls.
I can only imagine he’s got a sharp brain-to-mouth skill/gift that I’ve always envied but sadly been allotted with one of those wretched tongue ties.
