May 1, 2009 at 19:20 #224847Yes they are.
I imagine it will have the ususal duo of McNae and Willoughby.
May 1, 2009 at 20:11 #224865Angus, James and Dave Gutfreund.

May 1, 2009 at 23:39 #224910Cheers Richard, i’ll have to tune in. Are you on anything for it yourself ?
May 1, 2009 at 23:56 #224914Not really my cup of tea tbh.

I fully expect like myself and Graysons you will be watching the big race tomorrow.
No not the Guineas or the Durrrrby
But the main race
The big one where only the toughest survive and where a place in horse racing history is guranteed.
The race is
The Heart of All England Maiden Hunter Chase at Hexham.
Think about it you know it make sense.

Sing it, brother.
A fine, fine race and a good winner of an above-average renewal this year, I thought. I’m sure, however, that I cannot have been the only viewer who stopped just short of heaving his or her foot through the TV screen at the conspicuous display of ignorance from the duty voiceover with regard to this race.
Exhibits A, B, C, etc.
“We have a problem here, as this is a maiden hunter chase”
Even the most perfunctory of research with the Weatherbys Chase’s
Loose-Leaf Update
would have made it rather less of a problem. The form figures, private handicap, etc. supplied therein are hardly impossible to follow.
“Any assistance you can give me would be appreciated”
See above.
“David Easterby has booked the service of the Greenall Brothers on Network Oscar and Opio”
He hasn’t "booked" them at all – they ride all of his horses (other than those in Ladies Opens, self-evidently) and have done for some time. Network Oscar and Opio aren’t owned by their father, Lord Daresbury, but most of the stable string are.
Further, Opio (owned by Cornelius Lysaght, no less) was a non-runner, but was not picked up as being one.
“Network Oscar has won four of his last six”
No mention of the fact that one of these was the Grimthorpe Gold Cup at Whitwell-on-the-Hill, one of the four Classic races of the pointing season (and widely telegraphed as such), last month.
Eliza Doalott was also incorrectly sexed throughout the race preview.
I appreciate that hunter chases inspire ambivalence among certain followers of racing, if not outright opposition on betting or ethical reasons, but it’s still hugely depressing that one of the two bespoke racing channels could not muster up a better effort than this.
…And it wasn’t just on the Heart Of All England, either. Is John Quinn really so obscure a trainer as to warrant being referred to blithely as, “That JJ Quinn who does well”? Thought not.

May 3, 2009 at 00:39 #225208Have you never seen (or heard for that matter) Dale McKeown in action before graysons?
Have to say I love this commentary.

‘The ground looks absolutely perfect’ and ‘Here comes (searches through colours in Racing Post) …. Linsalata’ are my favourite gems.
May 3, 2009 at 01:36 #225226DJ – yes I have, but nice bloke I am (!!!!!!
), I didn’t especially want to prejudice the rant by naming the guilty party up front.I was mostly annoyed that a broadcaster which does expect its booth-sitters to gen up sufficiently on, say, the form of the overseas action it covers into the evening, wouldn’t accord some of its native coverage the same basic courtesy. That would have held true whoever it was on duty tonight if they’d given the same performance.

May 3, 2009 at 17:13 #225315How dare they call it a Maiden Hunter Chase.
Its the Heart of all England in the same way that the Big Hunter Chhase at Stratford is the Horse and Hound.

The pointtopoint.co.uk John Corbet Cup surely??
May 3, 2009 at 21:59 #225413Apologies for intruding upon the P-T-P love-in, but did anybody else think the commentary on the Kentucky Derby was dreadful?
Tom Durkin only gets around to mentioning MINE THAT BIRD when that horse has gone three lengths in front. And even at that he sounds hesitant and momentarily unsure of the name.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv8x9x5A49s
(it would be interesting to hear Craig’s professional opinion on the matter).
May 3, 2009 at 22:05 #225417Not Tom Durkin’s finest hour by any means but it’s not easy with the mud-splattered silks. I had no idea which horse it was, did you ?
May 4, 2009 at 00:19 #225459Appalling commentary by someone who should be used to the conditions. Mr Hoiles, please can you show them how it is done please?

Just watched a replay of the Kentucky Oaks – she looked like she was cantering. Awesome.

Never have liked that bloke, sounded as if he was gasping for breath half the time and gets overexcited without much happening. Dreadful commentary.
