Enable was imo below her best though, judged by Cloth Of Stars proximity compared to 2017.
Value Is EverythingOctober 7, 2018 at 16:00 #1376678Does not matter how close Sea Of Class got today, Enable is different gravy. I’m happy, I done the forecast. But ask yourself how close Sea Of Class would have got, if she had been out for a year and had one prep run?
No where is the answer.
Enable just won an Arc, off one prep run. Amazing. They rarely come back, yeah she may not be as fit as she can be, but just wow at being able to do that!

You could argue Enable has improved a bit from 3-4 based on that run, with the 3YO allowance she had last year Cloth of Stars probably ran the same race overall as last year

WD Enable backers, a great race.
October 7, 2018 at 16:36 #1376688Nausered, you’re entitled to your opinion but you can’t say sea of Class would have been nowhere! this is a horse having just her sixth every run in what i consider the top race in europe, better even than the Derby in my eyes. Fair play to Enable she’s one hell of a horse but so is sea of class now. i’m just happy to have watched a great race.
October 7, 2018 at 16:47 #1376693In my opinion, Enable won today, despite the 3yo allowance, despite not being totally fit. Yet she still won. Sea Of Class had a dream run through so her draw did not matter as that’s how she would be ridden anyway… But still could not get to Enable.
Next year Enable will beat Sea Of Class much further, if both turn up off great preps. All my opinion of course Worzel.
October 7, 2018 at 16:50 #1376695Tremenjous horse race.
October 7, 2018 at 17:07 #1376699Fabulous race!!
And I am certainly not talking out of my pocket because I backed neither of them!!
Mrsraymo backed Sea Of Class and Cloth Of Stars too!!I have to say what a fabulous piece of training by Johnny G !! To get her remotely ready for this was nothing short of miraculous!!
The second is a hell of a horse too!! And it will be interesting to see if they keep Enable in training and would love to see both fully fit and ready to go for a re match!!October 7, 2018 at 18:20 #1376702Will Enable stay on training for next year? It will be fascinating to see Enable vs SOS again, probably in King George next year.
October 8, 2018 at 13:44 #1376760For those who thought Sea of Class had a dream run comments from James Doyle…
Unfortunately I got caught behind Kew Gardens, who just struggled for tactical speed at a key point of the race, which meant the race got away from me a bit.
October 8, 2018 at 14:23 #1376776that hurt having SOC at 25s, but what a race.
I’d be surprised if we did see Enable again next year, she seems to have been hard to train this year and i’d guess they might just call it a day.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!October 8, 2018 at 15:20 #1376779that hurt having SOC at 25s, but what a race.
Had to watch the race on my phone yesterday and just watched the replay earlier. Really unlucky there Jack, without a doubt the best horse in that race IMO
October 8, 2018 at 15:24 #1376780Mike, James Doyle gave it a great ride, but I’d say he’s talking a bit of codswallop there. Watch the replay, Kew Gardens is two horse widths off of the rail all the way round the false straight, by the time they swing for home on the last part of the bend, he is a good six horse widths off the inside and heading wide. It still takes SOC a full furlong under hand riding to get past Kew Gardens, who is also finishing fast. Doyle was where he wanted to be and made no effort to improve, and Kew Gardens cost him nothing IMO. If anything Doyle should maybe have started to make some ground up slightly sooner on the false straight. 2f out he has to sit for a very brief moment. But I’d say he got the run he wanted for the filly.
October 8, 2018 at 16:38 #1376783Yewh i agree nausered
And botchy, weight for age at this time of year is a bit, ugh, do you think off levels next year sea of class would have a hope? IMO i think shes top class, but not enable class.
October 8, 2018 at 18:46 #1376787If both first and second stay in training next year’s race will be interesting. You’ve got Enable who is better than she showed yesterday… and Sea Of Class who put up a career best performance.
Hopefully Enable can get back to her very best and Sea Of Class can progress further.
Value Is EverythingOctober 9, 2018 at 01:06 #1376807I agree his best performance was on soft but he was never likely to get soft in midsummer was he? And now you’re saying he doesn’t run in the Arc coz he won’t beat Enable on quicker ground. What about the King George then? There was no Enable then. How about the Irish Champion or the Juddmonte or the Eclipse or any of the middle distance Group 1’s in Europe this season where Enable hasn’t been able to run? If you are right Mark then they should just say it. “Once again we are not running because of Enable”.
Fwiw there is now lots of rain in the forecast for Paris overnight and into tomorrow and I also think Roaring Lion will be fav at Ascot if the ground is good. One question i’d like you to ask yourself. When Cracksman enters the horse box to be taken to stud will you will be able to say “ah – there goes a great horse who fulfilled his potential.”? All I keep hearing from AO and JG is how he is back to his best. They’ve been saying it for months! And yet here we have the biggest middle distance race in Europe and for the second and last time, a fully fit Cracksman will be missing it. Crazy.
Sorry haven’t responded to your points before, Joni; been busy.
If looking at when AO first mentioned the Enable Cracksman match up in the King George and Arc, the chance of Cracksman being better on soft ground was nowhere near as significant. Improved to be placed in the Derby on good-firm being – up to that point – his best performance. Therefore subsequent further progression shown on a softer surface could well have been a coincidence. ie Because of that Epsom performance the improvement shown late last season could be thought just natural progression through the season and nothing to do with ground.
Not until 5 weeks before the King George (in the POW) was there any real evidence of Cracksman not being as effective on good-firm. Before the POW am sure AO and Gosden would’ve run Cracksman on good-firm in the King George and/or the Arc – Enable or no Enable. But after the POW the level of performance Cracksman is thought capable of on good-firm is now significantly worse than a soft surface. Therefore on good-firm if any real top class horse is in the field (eg Enable) it is bound to put connections off running when there’s a viable alternative… What was said by connections before the POW has to be put in to perspective. Just the same as all of us punters can change our minds about a horse over time/with new evidence, so too can owners and trainers.
Now that – in their eyes – Cracksman disappointed on good-firm, they’re going to be reticent about running again on the surface unless there is no alternative race. Won’t run in the Arc on good-firm when there’s an alterative race on (probably) softer, more advantageous ground in the Champion… The race he put up that brilliant performance last year.
If coming up good-firm in the Champion there is no viable alternative race… So can understand why Cracksman has missed the Arc in favour of the Champion. The Arc may be Europe’s best race, but on average winner’s Timeform ratings the Champion comes a close second.
All depends what happens on 20th October as to whether Cracksman fulfils his full potential. Although that is primarily imo down to coincidence rather than connections – a long hot summer. Missing each race in hope of the next race being run on softer. Had Cracksman run in all the Championship middle-distance races – and lost due to the ground – his reputation would’ve taken an even greater dip than it already has.
Value Is EverythingOctober 9, 2018 at 10:05 #1376815I backed Cracksman in his Derby very heavily. If the ground had been softer, he would have romped that race. The Derby was the race where he showed his dislike for fast ground. I think this horse has suffered massively through being around with Enable. But the biggest barrier to his failure to live up to expectations, is his tackle between his legs as already mentioned. Jonny G is Jonny G, but he ain’t no Sir Cecil. Cracksman needed Henry as a trainer, and a jockey who actually believed his horse was the best around. Whatever Cracksman does in his last race, the talent got wasted IMO there.
January 24, 2019 at 12:44 #1393436I see Teddy G says Enable could well have a crack at the International this year, not sure if she would be quick enough, obviously york’s long straight will help, but just think something might be a bit quicker. Thoughts people?
