    Hi guys.

Just interested to see who plays Ante Post here and who has landed a decent bet from bigger odds when betting Ante Post.

I personally haven’t but i am thinking of having a few Ante Post bets for Cheltenham.

    Thanks.

    Gareth.

If you can afford why not !, but only if you can afford it, AP Betting is a rich mans game. I can’t for the world of me even think of a good AP bet worth having, apart from Sublimity who will probably drift at some stage during the year, when some so called pretender throws in a half decent effort, hold fire until the new year and absoluetly lump on Sublimity, "This horse is the real deal"

ALDERBROOK at 25/1 when he won the champion hurdle, think i read he’d passed away the other day.
INCHCALOCH at 33/1 before he won the ceszarawich. more recently, backed MASSINIS MAGUIRE last year at 33/1 before he won at the festival. happy days but not many.

this year have had a wee tickle on NEPTUNE COLLONGES at 60/1 for the gold cup.

I only have tiny bets so I put small ante post bets on throughout the winter. Backed Sublimity at 80/1 last year for the Champion Hurdle so was very excited to see him win; always go on the Tuesday as well so it was a pretty good day. When the Grand National weights come out I put a few even tinier bets on straight away and like to watch the prices come in….[or out!] mo

I also think Sublimity could be a horse worth watching in the Champion market. I think his win has been underated. He’s teh only one I’d be interested in AP for Cheltenham at this stage.

I usually dabble in the Guineas’ markets , particulary the fillies’ version, and have had some success in the past . But it is has been a little harder in recent years to get on at a decent price because bookies have been getting scrouge-like with their odds from an earlier stage.

I love a little AP bet to myself, a great feeling when they land. Currently got a few on the go for Cheltenham and the Guineas. I can’t understand AP betting in certain races, however. For instance, novice races at Cheltenham at this stage of the season, when the eventual winner probably hasn’t jumped a hurdle/fence in public yet! Or the GN prior to the weights coming out.

I can put the kiss of death on a horse by backing it AP, sometimes literally – most notably I had backed Nil Desperandum heavily for this years National.

I definitely lose more than I win backing AP, however it is still good when a nice AP play does come to fruition.

    My two best were

    1) Just So in the ’94 National – with it being a wet winter I backed him all prices from 50/1 AP to 20/1 on the day – luckily e/w – even though he only managed second, the place returns were still nice.

    2) Voy Por Ustedes in the 2006 Arkle and Numbersixvalverde in the 2006 National. I backed them both in singles and doubles from January onwards, especially the former and the Arkle winnings paid off my mortgage, which was nice. (the mortgae wasn’t that big I hasten to add – but it was still nice to pay it off all the same).

But as I said, I have more losers than winners AP, that is why the successful ones stick in the memory.

feel very guilty when I do my national ante post bets [Betty’s Boy, Nil Desperandum etc]. Always say that I’ll watch my recordings of last years Cheltenham in the run up to the festival, but never get round to it and then regret it. Sun Alliance novices[?] hurdle always worth disecting eg Brave Inca, Sublimity…..horse for this year – Chief Dan George I think…

Clopf – Champion Hurdle – I think this horse has been underestimated although it has been backed on BF recently.

My two most memorable and pleasing ante post winning bets were Aldaniti (Grand National 20/1), Musical Bliss (1,000 gns 14/1 – won race 1st time out that season)

Not that big in the monetary sense but a few I can remember:-

    Hoh Leng 33/1 (Bunbury Cup)
    Collier Bay 25/1 (Champion Hurdle)
Looks Like Trouble 40/1 (Sun Alliance Chase)

One of the biggest disappointments was The Fellow at 50/1 in the Gold Cup but tempered by the fact I backed Garrison Savannah at 22/1 on the day.

Ante post betting is a complete waste of time unless you know a horse will definitely run. Getting 25/1 about a horse that might be 5/1 if it runs, thats only got a 20/1 chance of winning is poor value.

I have to agree with you 100%, Ante Post is for a bit of fun and nothing else.

It’s worth the gamble, I suppose, if you know something about a horse not generally know to the public.

An ex- Malton Trainer set him self up when he was head lad at Easterby’s with an amazing 3 cross incluing the gold cup winner Little Owl at 33/1 and 2 others I can’t remember. Fantastic when it comes off.

You can never be sure what’s round the corner and anyone who gives you a tip more than 24 hours before a race is acting on a wing and a prayer. So it is a very big Gamble………anyone wanna give me 10/1 Kauto Star for the next gold cup I’ll take the chance though

I much prefer waiting to hear the horses blood count was ok and know he ate up in the morning……then if I am told to have a bet I am the first one down at the bookies for any AP prices that are going.
