    No.
This is about the horses, not their races or owners or jockeys or trainers. I think that Old Tom the Lincoln Handicap winner might also have the same connection.

Did they all make their debut at the same track ?

    No.
    Do you want a clue?
I’m not sure quite how to give one. Lets say it is about what happened to them rather than their racing.

Sun Castle died of a tetanus infection while still in training and I recall Old Tom dying soon after his Lincoln win. I know next to nothing about Shamrock Star so I will have a guess they all died young from an infection.

    You were almost there……
All three died of tetanus. Which is extra sad as the latter two died when the vaccination for tetanus was available.

O.K. An easy one to get off strike.

What links 1967 Derby winner Royal Palace and Chief Singer ?

Is it that they both made their racecourse début in the Coventry Stakes?

Yes indeed. Chief Singer winning it and Royal Palace finishing down the field after showing some promise.

Noel Murless often started his best two year olds in what we now call group races. How times have changed !

Chief Singer’s début lingers in the memory. Absolutely stunning performance.

Another Royal Ascot question: what links the 1987 meeting with current European politics?

This has been up for a week unanswered now, so let me say that I don’t want a convoluted dissertation for an answer. In fact, the answer’s just one word. B-)

That’s right: Henry Cecil’s strapping colt of that name demolished his field in the 1987 Hardwicke Stakes and Viktor Orban is the current “strongman” Prime Minister of Hungary. Over to you, MV.

How was the trainer of the 1962 Kentucky Derby winner most elegantly linked with a Pat Eddery classic winner in the 1980s?

The noted bon viveur Horatio Luro, trainer of Northern Dancer, was nicknamed El Gran Señor. Northern Dancer’s son out of the mare Sex Appeal, foaled in 1981, was named in honour of him and went on to win a scintillating 2,000 Guineas under Pat Eddery… who didn’t cover himself in glory on the same colt in the 1984 Derby.

This titbit was often repeated on the build up to the 1984 Derby, Pat riding El Gran Senor, meaning ‘The Great Man’ and named after trainer Horatio Luro who trained the 1962 Kentucky Derby winner Decidedly, and more notably Northern Dancer two years later.
