In which Grand National of the Victorian era did a cat win while a doggie trailed home sixth and last?
Clue: jockeys’ nicknames!
Clue: the previous year’s winner had to be pulled up when the bridle broke and came off after a bad mistake at the 2nd.
Clue: at the same fence (Fan) on the second circuit the 100/15 favourite was knocked into by spectators upon landing, fell and brought down two others.
Clue: the Marquis Of Queensbury had his only National ride in this renewal.
February 19, 2018 at 19:16 #1343095Well, everybody is stumped so the answer is 1873. John Maunsell ‘Cat’ Richardson rode the winner, Disturbance, while Captain Arthur ‘Doggie’ Smith was on the 6th, Star And Garter. The previous year’s winner was Casse Tete, the favourite Footman, and the Marquis aboard True Blue who was always towards rear and well tailed off and exhausted when falling along the canal side, second circuit.
Let’s try an ‘easier’ one. Who is the only Grand National winner to have run in the Derby?

SilkMarch 8, 2018 at 23:25 #1345365Lol, I thought one of you Flat bods would know this, Silk.
It was the horse’s Chase debut, 4 past/future GN winners also ran, and the Derby I refer to is the one staged annually at Epsom!
March 10, 2018 at 17:44 #1345595Was this 19thc, 20thc or 21stc?
Or is that too big a clue? My guess it’s 19thc.March 10, 2018 at 18:54 #1345598Yes, the latter part of the 19thc.
March 12, 2018 at 10:38 #1345852Two shots: the mare Empress National winner in 1880 at 5 or Regal also winner at 5 in 1876?
Flat bod…Best Wishes
SilkMarch 12, 2018 at 11:16 #1345860Good shouts, Silk, and you are not far away re the year but alas both wrong. The horse I am looking for was 6 when winning the National.
March 12, 2018 at 21:46 #1346014The colt Reugny(FR) exported for stud duty in Australia, who won the National at 6 in 1874? Too much guessing.
Best Wishes
SilkMarch 12, 2018 at 22:24 #1346030Not Reugny either, Silk, I’m afraid. Here’s a couple more clues:
Are you The Prodigal Daughter?
The winning jockey was The Farmer!
March 23, 2018 at 16:17 #1347849It was Voluptuary by Cremorne out of Miss Evelyn by Orlando, bred and raced on the flat by Lord Rosebery, he was last home in the Derby of 1881 won by Iroquois. As a six year old he won the Grand National and ended up in a Drury Lane show, The Prodigal Daughter, where he jumped a brook on the stage.
Hence the clues earlier…..March 23, 2018 at 17:17 #1347850Yes, very well done, Crepello. It was the 1884 National and Voluptuary was ridden to victory by E.P. ‘Ted’ Wilson, aka The Farmer, and trained by his brother, William. After treading the boards for four years Voluptuary returned to run in the Nationals of 1889-91 finishing: F,F,P (was 10/1 and still travelling well when falling at the 27th in 1890 but had no chance of successfully giving 16lb to Ilex). What a horse!
Over to you…

What links the top northern sprinter from the late 1950s Shamrock Star to the 1941 St Leger winner?June 12, 2018 at 19:47 #1356704Both from the Gainsborough sire line ?
June 12, 2018 at 22:49 #1356718There were many horses racing in the previous century from what was a very strong sire line. This is not to do with their breeding.
