Which top sprinter in the 80’s burst through the stalls prior to a Group race when he was a short price fav and I had had a lumpy bet on him, ran the entire length of the track without the jockey on, ran into some gates at the entrance to the track but was still allowed to take his chance? Despite this he was narrowly beaten into second place by a horse owned by Terry Ramsden

Could the horse be Silver Fling 13/8 fav in the Diadem Stakes(Gr.3) 1989, 2nd to Chummy’s Favourite?
Silver Fling won the Abbaye(Gr.1) in her next run.

    Nice try KS, incorrect though.

How did Chummys Fav ever manage to beat Silver Fling? Reckon it must have been a top ride from Frankie, Chummys Fav’s previous win was a 2 grand handicap at Brighton under Silver Fling’s jockey.

To get back to my horse in question, he has a namesake who posts on this forum.

Thanks Yeats, but it was only because of the namesake in here.
I had tried to look up Grey Desire before, but there are no records available, only thing I could find with a little record was on pedigreequery.com, not exactly factbased.
Do you know where I could find free records on fx Grey Desire, I’m not gona pay Weatherbys by the question…?
    Next q, later.

It is a bit of a problem KS, I would like to look up Grey Desire’s record myself to make sure I didn’t imagine him bolting prior to the Duke of York. I have one or two formbooks from around that time and have used my memory, not ideal. Was hoping the race might be on youtube but can’t find it there either, maybe espmadrid has got it in his loft.

Think the problem is with the Racing Post not starting till the late 80’s there seems to be no records prior to that. Maybe one or two other posters have some ideas.

Ok Yeats, was worth trying to find (another records database).
I found 2 races with Grey Desire incl the Duke of York https://youtu.be/q54A89R026g
Impressing win in the Quail Stakes https://youtu.be/Apibm92IZ98

Next Q: Name the first Scandinavian (Danish) born Jockey to ride in the Grand National, the Year and the horse.

    Best Wishes

No idea if he was the first KS, but I’ll have a stab with Lars Kelp, who rode The Thirsty Farmer in 1989?

    Well done VTC!
He’s the one I meant, Lars Kelp now training at the brand new Bro Park outside Stockholm. He’s supposed to be the first Dane in the National.
Lars Kelp was the Wonderboy of Scandinavia in the early 1980’ties, winning it all; Jockeys Championship as an apprentice, Classic winner on one of the Great Scandinavian racefillies Humbug, who also ran in the Washington DC International with young Kelp up.
Even the apprentice weight allowance was lowered due to Kelps domination in the races in Denmark!

    Over to you VTC.

    Best Wishes

Cheers KS, as I said, no idea if he had been the first, but certainly the only one I could think of. Good to hear he’s still going strong.

Ok, here’s one which I’m sure you or others will get straight away, it’s too easy, but thought it an obvious one to ask on the same theme, and I don’t really like setting the questions lol
    Q. Name the last Scandinavian trained horse in The National.

Trinitro in 2000, trained by Rune Haugen. I’m not aware of any other Scandinavian trained horse having run in the race.
