Since the race’s inception in 1836 there have been many instances of different horses sharing the same name running in the Grand National at one time or another. However, there is only one example of the same moniker applying to 4 separate animals over the years. What is that name?
December 13, 2016 at 10:06 #1276994A wild guess: Royal Mail
December 15, 2016 at 17:33 #1277272I’m afraid not Crepello. There have been 2 Royal Mail’s, the 1937 winner who also ran in 38 & 39 and the NZ bred horse who took part in 1981/82/83.
I’m sorry for the delay in reply folks, have been visiting my parents whose place is an internet wilderness!
Is this question too hard – should I start giving clues?
December 15, 2016 at 19:47 #1277284Hi GM – nothing at all wrong with a difficult question but perhaps a clue might be useful.
Especially if Peter Simple is incorrect. I know there were two of them so, who knows, there may have been four.
December 15, 2016 at 20:30 #1277290Alas, Seasider, just the two Peter Simple’s – a bay & a grey.
Well, here’s a first clue: the name is also the title of a track on a Rod Stewart LP!
December 16, 2016 at 10:31 #1277341Farewell?
December 16, 2016 at 15:43 #1277388Sorry, Crepello, no.
One more clue: M*rg*r*t Th*tch*r, for example, could be said to be this.
As well as the name that has been associated with 4 different GN runners there are three other names which have each applied to 3 separate horses so I’ll accept any of these.
December 16, 2016 at 16:14 #1277392Did any of these horses win or place in the race?
December 16, 2016 at 16:55 #1277395True Blue?
December 16, 2016 at 18:11 #1277402Yes, well done Buckers.
In 1839 an 8yo True Blue was 4th (prominent, faded somewhat, inherited a place at last).
In 1873 a 7yo True Blue Fell (tailed off by WJ, exhausted when fell at 2nd fence (Fan) on 2nd circuit).
In 1901 a 10yo True Blue Fell (6th at WJ. Still travelling well when snow balled in feet & fell 27th (OD). Broke back. Dead).
In 1937 a 9yo True Blue Fell (towards rear until fell 2nd).
(True Blue is the opening track of Stewart’s 1972 LP Never A Dull Moment).
The names each carried by 3 different horses in GNs are Columbine, Pioneer & St George.
Over to you Buckers.
December 17, 2016 at 18:24 #1277654Thank you Golden Miller.
I know there are 1 or 2 Heavyweight Grand National aficionados on here but I am not one of them.
I knew that True Blue had ran in the first race and also had placed later on, but it was the Margaret Thatcher clue that sealed the deal. I am happy that the rod stewart clue did not help.
If anybody would like to set the next question as I will not be back on for at least the next week as I will be working away
December 20, 2016 at 15:26 #1277922Ok let’s try this one which hopefully will prove a bit easier.
What were the monikers applied to the only horse to run in the National under two different names?
December 21, 2016 at 16:31 #1278014At a guess it must be one that ran in it and then went abroad to somewhere like France or Czech Republic before coming back to race in it again?
Value Is EverythingDecember 21, 2016 at 19:51 #1278036Without referring to Google or old books in the loft, I suspect Fred Pontin may have something to do with it.
Got a feeling either Go Pontinental or Pontin Go may have ran in the race under a different moniker.
December 21, 2016 at 21:57 #1278050That was a good notion Ginger, however, COK you are close enough. Gay Navarree, 1962 & 63 raced in the GN 64 – 66 as Pontin-Go. Scandalous that the authorities allowed this! Over to you COK.
December 23, 2016 at 20:13 #1278283Sorry, been busy with work and family stuff as it’s Christmas and all that. So this is a pretty easy question (I think) but here goes:-
One Man was one of a number of multiple winners of the King George VI Chase over the years but what was unique about the famous grey’s two victories?
A Merry Christmas to all on TRF and your family and friends,
SeanDecember 23, 2016 at 21:21 #1278295Both victories were achieved in the same year (1996) following the postponment of the 1995 renewal because of adverse weather conditions at Kempton.
One Man’s first win that year came at Sandown in January.
