Not for the first time, dramatic pauses while announcing the result of the photo.
Millions of pounds at stake you clown, just give the result and melt into the background, the best officials are the ones you don’t notice.
If you want to play Laurence Olivier get to the theatre.
July 7, 2013 at 09:36 #445021C’mon…it’s for the punters at the course on a scorching Saturday in midsummer; all good stuff.
You gotta twirl the edges sometimes, sell some of the the sizzle not just the sausage..!

July 7, 2013 at 09:45 #445022I must admit I don’t mind the "dramatic pauses", it adds to the tension and excitement.
I would rather have a dramatic pause than the Judge try and attempt the world speed record in getting the result out.
One of the best (and dare I say very brave) dramatic pauses came not from a photograph but the result of a stewards inquiry. It was at Royal Ascot a couple of years ago and the inquiry involved The Queen’s horse and it looked as though it could have gone either way. Lee McKenzie was announcing the result, "Here is the result of the Stewards Inquiry ……." and he must have paused a good five seconds, although it seemed longer "….. the placings remain unaltered." Heart stopping but gripping stuff.
In a similar vein I’m not sure if it is fall-out from the Smith debacle but Nick Bostock was being ultra-cautious with the photographs at Leicester yesterday. Now I know Leicester is one of the worse courses in the country for making naked-eye calls, as the angles are really weird but in a couple of what looked clear head victories he still called a photograph.

I’m surprised at Lee
Afsare 2010, wonder what The Queen thought? Incidentally does anyone know which was the last horse to be disqualified from first place at Royal Ascot? There does seem to have been a tightening up from judges since the Smith debacle and more photo’s called, not a bad thing in my view and plenty of time then for tension etc but once the result is being announced just get it done for God’s sake, I don’t want to hear some frustrated actor getting his kicks at punters expense, Fiddler Goodwill’s voice is particularly grating anyway, if he had one like old judge Alastair Stewart then it may be acceptable.

I can’t, off the top of my head, remember anything getting disqualified at the Royal meeting.
July 7, 2013 at 12:55 #445036In 1988 Royal Gait was disqualified in the Gold Cup after winning by 5l. In 1992 he won the Champion Hurdle.
July 7, 2013 at 13:55 #445038Topanoora, at 8-1, was disqualified from first place in the 1991 Hardwicke in favour of Rock Hopper, the odds-on favourite. Not that I’m still bitter, mind.
July 7, 2013 at 20:13 #445070When there is a photo finish I wish the TV screens at the racecourse would show the actual photo finish so we can mull it over for ourselves which way we think the result has went.
I find the spinning Winning Post and the words "Photo Finish" so annoying…they add nothing to the occasion or suspense…just show us the photo please!
I think this was a RFC invention if I’m not mistaken.
July 7, 2013 at 22:20 #445081One of my all time favourite racing moments was the pause Brian Goodwill put in before announcing the result of the photo between Kauto Star and Imperial Commander in the Betfair a few years ago. It definitely added to the drama.
And its a shame you don’t like his Burnley accent. Could be something to do with him coming from Burnley!
