I do like the younger of the two sprint kings owned by Paddy Power,

    Slade Power

. His progression has certainly been carded by yours truly and the way he won his race today was very tidy indeed. He’s been knocking on the door in group 1 company and I believe that now he may finally be good enough to step up and win one. I imagine Haydock will be next on his agenda.

Just about found a score to play with, don’t tell Mrs Boz!

Hell, two ante post triumphs in two September weekends, I quite like the sound of that!

Paddy Power you little beauty  Having been mightily impressed with the performance of

    Indian Maharaja

I did the online rounds, checking all of my accounts for ‘bits n bobs’ to throw at next year’s Derby winner. I discovered a phantom £65 in my ‘Paddy’ account that I apparently received from

    Cape Peron

in the Betfred Mile(money back as a free bet if your horse finishes 2nd on any Channel 4 race). Result!

    :D :D :D

I do suffer somewhat from a touch of the old OCD, apparently more than I used to realise as since I got this on it’s been rattling round my brain that I need another £17.50e/w on it to round it up a bit  Two inexplicably sleepless nights later, I finally gave in and scratched the itch

I like the looks of the big race today. Apart from Goodwood i’ve not been bothering a great deal with the racing recently, but my small bet on Intello at 11/4 gives me an interest. I’m quite keen on his chances.

Annoying day for me today Wolf. Didn’t have a penny down once again as Ikea took the lot earlier  Talking to a mate before though I told him that although it was a tight race, if I was going to get involved I’d probably have a wee slither on

    Moonlight Cloud

as she seemed to be the horse in the race with the least going against her. Add that to the fact that I’ve been tracking

    Slade Power

recently as I believe he’s really ready for the big time now and I’ve missed out on quite a tasty double there!

What a joke that Coventry was as well. I’ve been telling everyone for as long as they’ve wanted to listen that this

    War Command

is no good and today he was found out. I must admit though, I am a little surprised that he had his colours lowered so soon, but that just goes to show what a distinctly average animal he is. Anyone who was taking the 5/1 for him for the Guineas wants carting off to the loony bin!

It happens all the time mate. Don’t back them and they bolt home. I also backed Olympic Glory at 35/1, and Frankie just couldn’t get there. If they thought War Command was going to win at Ascot, i think Joseph would have been on him. Therefore it’s no suprise he didn’t win yesterday, plus you have been saying he doesn’t appear to you as what he’s being hyped as. His ante post price was rotten, and i have noticed this season that the odds compilers are restricting the ante post market. The week before the race has saw prices tightening right up, and many horses have been bigger prices on the day. Next up is the Leger, and i previously backed Feel like Dancing at 24/1.

    Good work on

    Feel Like Dancing

Wolf, you’ve got a fair price there. He looked tough as they come at Newmarket and is better than the bare bones of that shows.

    Leading Light

looks another top notcher from the ‘Coolmore clan’, but I believe his better days lie over further and agree with Tommy and Darren in that he could well make up into a Gold Cup horse down the line. As solid as

    Galileo Rock

looks when you read this season’s form figures of 332, all in supposedly ‘top class’ races, how anything can be top of

    any

ante post market off the back of

    this

year’s Derby is beyond me. Ok, so as the old cliché goes ‘he’s done nothing wrong’, but in all honesty this year’s Derby form is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. The other Gosden horse looks a noteworthy contender but I’m more than happy that, whether Buick considers him first pick or not(which I fully expect he won’t), we’re on the right one

    A picture of my

    Almuhalab

I ‘borrowed’ from Philippa Hills’ Twitter page, leading out a group of 2 year olds at home. Not the clearest of pictures but from what I can see he looks a big old unit and has a nice frame to grow into. When asked if he possessed the talent of his dam, the response was, "He’s a big lad so we’re going quietly but he’s a very good mover."

Let’s hope we see him on a racecourse in the near future

Slade Power is a horse whose career I’ve followed closely Boz. Although I thought Royal Ascot might come too soon for a horse whose life has not been plain sailing, I thought the July Cup would see him in a better light and so it proved. He looks like he’s still improving and Sunday’s smooth success under a penalty was very impressive. He’s one to be considered wherever he goes.

Having said all that you’re probably as well off laying him  Think I’m going to keep my powder dry until the jumps proper returns, I’m unable to pick my nose on the flat these days. Been doing a little bit of study for the jumps lately and the firepower in the Willie Mullins yard is phenomenal  A few years ago in Ireland you couldn’t split Mullins and Noel Meade but Meade’s string has gone one way while his chief rival has gone the other.

Couldn’t agree with you more on several fronts there Tommy. Firstly,

    Slade Power’s

progression through the ranks has been very noteworthy indeed. I’d spotted you also had him on your radar  His performance on Sunday was, like you said, ultra impressive, and although I know you’ve believed yourself several times this year that ‘his time had come’, I hadn’t been overly convinced that despite his potential he was quite ready to win in group 1 company. I believe though that his time is now and, should he take the Haydock route, he’ll be bang there and can mix it with the likes of

    Lethal Force

, who himself’s had a hard race since they last met.

I’m with you as well mate, this whole flat season malarkey is getting old and I only have a nibble from time to time for a bit of fun. If I do see one in my eyeline that I

    really

mean business with however, that’s when the gloves really come off 8) An example that would immediately spring to mind would be my Derby horse,

    Indian Maharaja

. I’m convinced this lad’s going to be a bit special and in all honesty am a little surprised he hasn’t hardened at the top of the Derby market since I grabbed the 16s. That kind of thing doesn’t worry me though as I know what I see, and what I see Tommy I like very much indeed

Well well well, finally things have become interesting 8) Finally something of some significance(and it was of

    some

significance) has descended from the mist and pulled out a real challenge to my

    Indian Maharaja

    . The debut of

    Free Eagle

was electric at Leopardstown earlier, anyone who missed it I’d recommend you watch it back. This muscular 2 year old’s huge stride would have me running scared if I didn’t know what I have on my side, and that is a

    proper

Derby horse trained by a master at getting his top boys ready for the big one in June. In

    Indian Maharaja

Aidan O’Brien possesses a future multi-group 1 winner to add to his roll of honour, and Derby winner number five. This

    Free Eagle

is the best we’ve seen to rival him so far and is a worthy adversary, but my lad’s going to take all the beating. I look forward to Racing Post Trophy day with immense intrigue, as this’ll be the day that all the talking will stop and everyone will realise just what we have on our hands here.

Close this time Dermot, but once again, no cigar……………

October 26th, Racing Post Trophy day at Doncaster. The birthplace of many a star down the years, and more importantly in the foreground, Derby winners. If all goes to plan and neither set of connections shirk the challenge this will be clash number one of two potential stars in waiting,

    Indian Maharaja

    and

    Free Eagle

. Both have made huge impressions in their short careers(very short with regards to the latter, he only debuted tonight!), and both have therefore found their way to the head of the Derby betting. I’ve already well and truly nailed my colours to the mast with full confidence for Epsom, and I’m convinced that the next star of Ballydoyle will come out on top against comers from all corners. Things have got a hell of a lot more interesting in next year’s Classic hunt in the last couple of hours, but anyone who sees the debut of the Weld horse as a chance to write off

    Indian Maharaja

will do so at their peril!

    Finally my patience with

    Almuhalab

looks to have been rewarded 8) He’s been entered on Friday for a 7 furlong maiden at HQ. My how I’d love to hear him mentioned as a Guineas horse in the post-mortem of the race, would make my 50/1 look tasty if he makes any worthwhile impression

Money is awfully tight in the ‘Boz’ household at this moment in time, but when I see one I believe in(and get permission from ‘Mrs Boz’ ) then a small stakes wager is most certainly called for. The Ebor on Saturday is a notoriously difficult race to fathom. The top of the market certainly looks full of talent with the likes of

    Tiger Cliff

    ,

    Sheikhzayedroad

    and

    Well Sharp

amongst the front runners. Talented individuals indeed, but individuals who have also shown their hand this season. The market looks top heavy full of horses who have won their race already, or just ran into trouble which doesn’t necessarily appeal at shortish odds. It’s easy to side with these sorts, knowing there is clearly potential there but I don’t deal with hard luck stories in big handicaps at short odds. With the Cecil horse in particular, he still appears fairly enough treated to be more than competitive in this sort of race and is sure to be a big improver. In these situations however I often like to dig a little deeper, rummage amongst the bigger prices and pull one out that still has their race to run. This season has shown yet another fine amount of improvement for David O’Meara, and I’m quite keen on one of his at tasty looking odds.

    Tropical Beat

returned from almost a year out a couple of weeks back at Musselburgh, running a very fine race in second. He’s sure to come on a ton for that, and with this being the plan all year long he can’t be ignored. The ground or trip will be of no concern to this lad and I reckon the 25/1 knocking about for him needs some attending. Like I said only small stakes, but what is it that fat get says on the Tesco advert………….?

I find it surprising how many people on here seem to have completely written

    Al Kazeem

off today. He may not be flashy in the way he does things but he always manages to grind it out and get the job done, almost in the manner

    Sea The Stars

    used to. Today in

    Toronado

he’s admittedly up against the quickest and most talented animal he’s faced to date, but with the questions marks looming over whether the Hannon horse will stay, I’d have to plump with

    Al Kazeem

to show how good he really is and that he’s not just had an easy time of it this year. Whatever happens, it’s yet another clash to savour, something we seem to have been spoiled with this flat season. No money today, just giving my two pennies worth.

Clearly not a lot can be said for

    Toronado

after that as we learnt nothing about whether or not he stays. I do wonder myself though if everyone’s gone a bit overboard about

    Al Kazeem’s

performance. If Roger Charlton’s two main points he’s made regarding his stable star all season are to be treated as gospel then he a)needs a bit of cut in the ground and has got away with it thus far, and that b)his main target all year long has been the Arc. When he hit the front today he looked one paced and couldn’t kick on. I think the softer ground that Longchamp in October will bring, along with the extra 2 furlongs could get the best out of this lad. He’s out to 10s now and I imagine he could get bigger. If anything, in a funny old way, today just made him a better Arc prospect for me.

It seems unlikely now that Free Eagle will run in the Racing Post Trophy Boz, he’ll probably run over a mile at Leopardstown on Irish Champion Stakes day instead. Actually, I’ll be in Dublin handing in my thesis that Friday so I might hang around for the racing if it suits when the time comes :)

There has been sustained support for Weld’s horse since his maiden win, so much so that 25/1 seems like a distant dream: 10/1 only available with one firm now

Finally Boz and his good woman have landed in their new abode, with internet installed and therefore TRF available again :D You do your nut sometimes just watching, and at any given moment feeling the need to put your thoughts down in words and not having a proper manner in which to do so. I’ve had a million and one things I’ve wanted to share, moan about, praise or just let off steam about in this time, and now I have my internet back I can’t think of half of them! Ah well, let’s start with the Saturday just been. I had a little slither on

    Slade Power

in the sprint but was unhappy with my selection as soon as the Ebor meeting, when connections decided to run him over an inadequate 5 furlongs. He may have reared in the stalls and lost his chance that way, but for me ‘Sole’ should stick at 5 and ‘Slade’ at 6. As for this

    Free Eagle

he did seem decidedly disappointing when getting turned over. I still agree on my initial thoughts with him though – he mightn’t win the Derby but he’s still a fine animal, better than he showed at Leopardstown Saturday. I can’t explain his poor showing but it did seem apparent as

    Australia

was gliding past him that Pat Smullen knew the game was up and didn’t give him too much of a hard time. Perhaps as Dermot Weld said initially, he’ll be a better 3 year old and those on him for Epsom I wouldn’t completely give up the ghost just yet as his best days are ahead of him. As for this

    Australia

, as impressive as he was in going past a horse that wasn’t at his best and even being ridden out fully, he’s not even the best horse at Ballydoyle so he won’t be winning the Derby.

    Indian Maharaja

is the chosen one and given the fact that the sounds coming from Aidan O’Brien indicate that he’s still the horse being lined up for the RP Trophy, the eventual destination for what is generally his number one, I have no reason to believe that they think otherwise.
