Paul, how do you get to Racecourse from the airport? are there buses? this is our second year of missing Punchestown and I’m looking for alternative ways of getting there.

Mo, I cheat – I hire a car!! £25 for one day or £74 for the entire Festival
There is a bus service from the centre of Dublin to the course and back afterwards.
think Punchestown has come on a lot in recent years hasn’t it….surprised you find the atmosphere there more to your liking though,…I wouldn’t have thought that possible after Cheltenham…perhaps a little more earthy?
I like the fact it is not as crowded as Cheltenham and although it is still boozy it tends not to be as aggressively boozy as Cheltenham
March 16, 2008 at 22:39 #151948impossible to back a winner there though, or, in my case, even more impossible than usual! I just love the way that everyone will just talk about horses all day and every day; remember standing on the racetrack one day with a local guy just pointing out places in the distance; the house where Elizabeth Arden lived and a farm where a Grand National winner was foaled – as they say in Ireland, ‘the man who made time made plenty of it…’
March 17, 2008 at 21:23 #152130No, it weren’t me…..it happened yesterday as well. The mod is a Red Sox fan, I’ve been told…
March 18, 2008 at 20:27 #152417lol..well that’s a relief.
Anyway, Nationals 9 Detroit 1 – I thought you said they were good!..lol
brilliant home run by Milledge -Whack!!…loved it, right into the crowd, this must be like hitting a 6 in cricket I think [?], couple of other ones too and some good fielding going on. I learnt a lot from that, but still a couple of things I didn’t quite get. they spend so much time interviewing people on that channel. I saw Ivan Rodriguez though, they spoke about him for a bit and then he got somebody out at 1st base with a good throw.
If a hitter gets a ‘walk’ to 1st base and there’s already someone there, I thought this 2nd one goes to the 2nd base, but he seemed to stay there and they chatted away.. then next hitter hit a home run and I expected this to be a 3 run homer but it was only 1 as those other 2 on 1st base seemed to have disappeared….couldn’t work that out..lol…
other than that…not bad
March 18, 2008 at 21:04 #152433Its just a friendly so the result is academical really…
The guy on first base must have been the first baseman from the other team as opposed to the hitters teammate…..you said they were chatting, that if often the case when a runner is on 1st and chatting to the opposing teams first baseman…..if his teammate was already on 1st base and he then walked, his teammate must mive to 2nd base…..
March 18, 2008 at 23:24 #152465…that’s what I thought
….might watch a bit of the Reds v Toronto tomorrow – size up the opposition.March 19, 2008 at 00:32 #152475There was a massive row last year when they accused Arod of putting one of their players (Toronto BJ’s) off by shouting ‘HA’ and made him drop the ball…lol…I’ll try and find the clip..
http://web.yesnetwork.com/media/archive … =2007&m=05
Go to the top of the page: 5/31/2007, where it says ‘Post Game Plus’
They kept throwing the ball at Arod’s head/body for a while after that in later games…..therefore, not a fan of theirs..lol

….might watch a bit of the Reds v Toronto tomorrow – size up the opposition.I just checked, Toronto are playing the Red Sox (there is another team called the Cincinatti ‘Reds’)
March 19, 2008 at 12:22 #152556Hello again
*wink*…lolThis is what I wrote at the start of this thread:-
“Rather than dwell on the latest shooting incident in Illinois, Pres. Bush or Iraq, I prefer to remember the better aspects of America…”
…so I’ll leave that discussion for others, elsewhere

meanwhile,
Sharpy, I had a look at that link…HA!…what a fuss about nothing, although he is a bit cheeky ARod, at times, don’t you think?…Just going to look at page 5 of this thread to remind me of a few things..
…knew it had to be on here someplace.edit,
thanks Sharpy, I think I’m up to date now, also it sorted out a query I had last night, I see it’s 3 outs per innings, that was puzzling me too.
March 19, 2008 at 12:53 #152567Good, glad you found it…
Did you see that guy drop a routine ball??

Yeah, he is a bit cheeky, but its not against the rules (borderline) and you’ve got to love his will to win….(we needed that win) …..HA! lol
March 19, 2008 at 14:15 #152584..he reminds me a bit of Ronaldo in football, brilliant at best, but inclined to take the mick…..as if I would know

anyhow Sharpy,
I’ve come across these two golden oldies, do you know of them?:-Shoeless Joe [Jackson]
and
"say who", "say what", "say where" "say hey"….love that..who said it?I’ve been reading about them on Wikipedia.
March 19, 2008 at 15:18 #152588Yes, he does have a certain swagger…lol
Not sure who said the quote, but Shoeless Joe was featured in one of the films I told you about ‘Eight Men Out’, which they showed a few times on terrestial TV….
Its based on the true story of game fixing by the ‘Black Sox’…apparently, he was a great player….
March 19, 2008 at 20:32 #152677..the other one was Willie Mays known as the ‘say hey kid’. He played during the 50’s to 70’s and was elected to Hall of Fame in 1979. He ended his career with the NY Mets and was considered one of the greatest all round players of all time.
That’s what I’ve just read…I’m sure you must have heard of him
March 19, 2008 at 21:04 #152685I never knew he was called that.
Yeah, Willie Mays, 4th all time in home runs…..his godson, Barry Bonds is the current leader, but lots of controvercy surronding him at the moment…..you thought Arod was bad……..

Other great hitters in the past besides the Babe, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, is Ty Cobb…..there was a film about him staring Tommy Lee Jones…..apparently, Cobb was a bit of a nutter too….lol
March 19, 2008 at 22:23 #152708See…I told you something…
but I just knew you’d know the rest..lol…well done
I shall look out for Barry Bonds…this doesn’t sound good
March 20, 2008 at 20:24 #152971BASEBALL COMP
As Opening Day is upon us (25th March) why not have a little comp, nothing serious…
(hence the smiley icon). You get 2 picks (1st choice and 2nd choice) for each of the 6 divisions. You get double points if your 1st choice wins the Division, the League Series (play-offs, semi finals) or the World Series (final). You receive half the points if your 2nd choice wins. (this is so that if your 1st choice is out of contention, you still have a bit of interest)
Division Winners = 2 points (1st choice), 1 point (2nd choice)
League Series Winners = 6 points (1st choice), 3 points (2nd choice)
