For the first time in 2011/12, these machines accounted for more gross gambling yield than over-the-counter business, reaching almost £1.5bn, says Mintel.

A survey of Newham betting shop customers by Campaign for Fairer Gambling found that:

    98% male
    77% under 35
77% from lower social grades (C2,D,E)
19% spend more than £100 each time they play
63% play more than once a week

The stats in bold surprise me; the others don’t

The reason you spend more than £100 is because you never win I tried them a few times the payout is shocking the last time I played a few years ago had a lucky break won £200 in £20 I put in cashed in and went.

"19% spend more than £100 each time they play"

I find that figure staggering – where, do these people get all this disposable-income to waste?

Is that £100 that they arrived in the shop with or a total of £100 put back into machine including any "winnings" that they’d acquired earlier but returned to the machine?

I’m certain that ‘spend’ means ‘lose’ in this case.

Each £100 staked on average returns £97, so I don’t think it would be news that 19% of customers lost £3 (or upwards).

Clearly they mean that near 1-in-5 is dropping a £100+. There’s loads of anecdotal tales of punters (‘punters’, no let’s be honest: addicts) losing a grand, five grand, ten grand in an afternoon.

The sheer lack of decency and dignity required to run a business like this is depressing. One can only imagine the self-delusional lies those in charge have to tell themselves every day to assuage their guilt.

Presumably a big fat salary going into their bank account every month is enough to take care of that one…

I interpret the "19% spend more than £100 each time they play" stat to mean ‘stake’ in place in ‘spend’.

That really isn’t surprising on the roulette, blackjack and fruit machines. The actual losses of a punter in sessions with £100+ staked are probably a small percentage of that total. I am an affiliate for a casino site and have a player who regularly stakes more than $1000 per day at online slots games. The total profit from this player is usually only about $40 per day.

Most mornings I walk up the shop or pop into Ladbrokes to get a free read of the post and there is always the same old lady on the FOBT or playing scratch cards. One morning after watching her put note after note after note into the machine I ask her where does she get here money from. I wont repeat her answer but Cormack’s ******* swear machine would be in full action.
