The happiest places in the world are the Scandinavian countries where taxation is fair – the gap between rich and poor is not that great. But our American controlled media demean this a socialism. But if socialism means people look out for each other it is a good thing. Most Americans are treated as slaves; no time for lunch, working long hours and a maximum of 2 weeks holiday a year. Then at no notice they are sacked and their healthcare drops out with it.
Do we really want to live like this? We now have some right wing parties (aided on by the press) who support Trump (systematically destroying the USA) and want us to end up like America. The last time we followed their policies the bond market collapsed and as a country we nearly went under.
October 15, 2025 at 06:44 #1742032I’m not sure that is true now, Sweden has an immigration problem and the price of beer is enough to make anyone cry.
We have got our sovereignty and can fly our flag from every lamp post!

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysOctober 15, 2025 at 06:46 #1742033I take it you haven’t bought a pint in London recently…

Both sides of the pond, a lot of people have been whipped up into such hatred that they now don’t care if their lives are negatively affected as long as foreigners and anyone who isn’t white has it even worse than they do.
This is partly the press as you note but social media is even worse. All owned by billionaires of course.
October 15, 2025 at 11:35 #1742039Yesterday I had 3 hours to wait between a blood test and appointment with consultant at UCLH. Spent the time in a pub round the corner, 6.10 for a pint of Sharps Sea Fury. That is not outrageous nowadays considering the location.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysOctober 15, 2025 at 21:15 #1742061A three-hour wait? Must have been due to all the illegal immigrants jumping the queue.
And the fact that you consider £6.10 for a pint “not outrageous” speaks volumes about how modern life is a total rip-off.
October 16, 2025 at 09:30 #1742076The chart in this article indicates that the increase in average beer price from 1989 to 2023 aligns pretty well with overall RPI
However, the average price quoted of £4.58 was for July 2023 and this article indicates it’s now £5.17
Which is a near-13% increase in two years, so an above-inflation spike would likely be seen if the chart was extended to the present
These charts do indeed indicate the sharp rise since 2023. The shaded areas are the national variation in prices

I’m not sure why you had to bring immigrants into the discussion but there are lots of them working in the MacMillan Centre, maybe even some in the Lab that processed my blood test?
As regards the price of beer, £6.10 in London is certainly not outrageous, very close to £5 a pint here in sleepy North Herts. There are cheaper places obviously, even one slightly further away from the hospital at £5,15 for Doombar but it is a bit noisier. I did manage on a previous visit to find a Wetherspoons but it was a bit further than I like to walk now.
Consultation went well but the present treatment is not working as well as it did. They have asked me to think about a trial of another drug and are going to explain more in an email.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysOctober 16, 2025 at 12:55 #1742085I wonder how much of the increase in the price of a pint is linked to ludicrous property prices and therefore the price of rent, rates etc. Not only those they pay themselves but the need to pay the staff enough to cover the same.
On a different subject what an utterly bizarre article on BBC Sport which at time of posting is the top sport story and fairly prominent on the main homepage.

Reasonably well known footballer, amongst fans of the sport at least, who was living in the north east moved to play for a relative pittance in the UAE because he didn’t want his kids growing up in England due to things like watch and phone theft in London. Must be a slow news day.
Best of luck with your continuing treatment Purwell.
October 16, 2025 at 13:35 #1742087just read from The Telegraph, released ‘witness statements’ over the China spy scandal is an interesting one from Matthew Collins (deputy national security advisor)
about China
‘cooperate where we can, compete where we need to, and challenge where we must’
Funny that the exact same wording was used in the Labour party manifesto in 2024?
and Starmer says his government played no part in the collapse of the trial ….. the above revelation calls this into doubt and suggests political inference.
good luck to all

I choose to take up arms and oppose this government for their lies, dishonesty and willingness to sell out the UK for his and Labour’s ideology.

Good luck to him with that. My daughter took the family to Dubai for a short holiday and she was terrified that one of her teenage boys might say or do anything that would get himself arrested (you know what teenage boys are like…drum it into them that, on no account must they say or do a certain thing and they’ll go out of their way to do it).
(Only just been told that this is the footballer whose XL bully dogs escaped from his garden and attacked someone.Good riddance to him I say!)October 16, 2025 at 14:33 #1742092“To be: or not to be: that is to the question:

Did you complain when Boris Johnson when foreign Secretary, hung over and dishevelled, was photographed at an airport on his way back from a party at a Russian oligarchs* European home? Or is it only things that this government do that motivate you?

I can only assume that your sarcasm meter has been knocked out of kilter by your medications. 😉
October 16, 2025 at 21:49 #1742105Incorrect Moe. The footballer leaving the country is Shelvey. The guy with XL Bullys was a guy called Benrahma, another ex premier league now playing in Saudi or some such place.
October 16, 2025 at 22:01 #1742106Shelvey should have lived in Yorkshire when the ripper was about. He’d have something to worry about then. Remember when dad had to leave me and my brother for 10 minutes or so whilst he picked mum up from the bus stop telling us not to answer the door to anyone.
October 16, 2025 at 22:25 #1742107Thanks Homer. Note to self check up before taking what Mike tells me at face value ( although, to be fair he’s usually right). I’m still avoiding the news in general because it’s so depressing and rely on him telling me what’s happening in the world when he comes round).
On the subject of dangerous dogs Mike has never recovered from having to fight off a Staffie that ran out of a garden and tried to kill our whippet; it had done the same to another dog the week before and the vet said that dog was lucky to be alive. He hates it if an off lead dog runs towards us, especially if it’s a bull breed. - AuthorPosts
