Any chance of a big race horse tip?😁😁December 22, 2024 at 01:09 #1716051I don’t think those of us that have children do so to give us people who will look after us in our old age. What we do is try to raise them so that they will grow into people that will contribute towards society in general try to make the world a better place.

Yeah, stick a grand on anything you like, it’s a lot more fun than putting it in a pension that you’ll never see.
December 22, 2024 at 01:57 #1716053A world without children?
Sounds too good to be true.
December 22, 2024 at 16:15 #1716073For once Glad, we totally agree.
Value Is EverythingDecember 22, 2024 at 16:19 #1716074A lot has been written here about the length of time the Conservatives spent in Government.
But perhaps people are asking the wrong question?
Maybe why would be a more appropriate question, perhaps looking at the other parties seeking election the public didn’t like what they saw or were offered?
After all in the following general elections both Labour and the Lib Dems declared themselves against the result of the referendum and went to war to defy a democratic vote.
Just something to ponder.
good luck to allDecember 22, 2024 at 17:07 #1716075I do wish those who believe the answer is having more kids and / or more immigrants… would think these things through. Advances in medication and surgery seem to happen every week. More and more people will live to an old age… And they will also live longer and longer with those advancements. Therefore the NHS will need a bigger and bigger percentage of GDP spent on it.
Having more children and / or immigrants might seem the answer, in order to care for the old. But more people on this Island means forever more houses being built to house them. More and more green belts being built on. Time will come when there is no green left. Maybe not in our children or our children’s children’s time; but if continuing growing England will have to build on our most beautiful National Parks etc. Is that what we want? England already has a far bigger population per square mile than the vast majority of comparable countries… It should also not be forgotten that children and immigrants grow old too. Therefore we will need at some point to break the link, having fewer younger people and immigrants. So when they in turn get old it will be a smaller number and therefore halt the destruction of our most beautiful lands. It may be very difficult, but it will be easier now than in the future when that percentage of working people will be even smaller.
Besides, as far as Climate Change goes – having children is the absolute worst thing anyone can do.
Value Is EverythingDecember 22, 2024 at 19:12 #1716079We didn’t go to war to defy a democratic vote. We tried to get another referendum based on fact and not lies and misinformation.
December 22, 2024 at 19:17 #1716080One massive problem we have is that we have in the order of a million homes sitting empty for various reasons. It’s an unsolvable one at this stage but should never have been allowed to happen.
December 22, 2024 at 19:49 #1716082True Richard.
There should be a way of taxing homes which are empty for long periods of time. As well as stopping building firms sitting on property or land for long periods – before doing anything with them…
And one of the biggest owners of land in England is the Church Of England. Yet we get all the moral highground stuff from them about how we should all help. Why don’t they help by building houses for rent on their land?
I do think it’s good that from April next year they’re going to let Councils charge second homes up to twice the normal Council Tax. I love my holidays in the countryside, but why not book a holiday cottage. Which can be used by others 52 weeks a year instead of owning a second home that might be used a few weeks a year. Making homes available for locals in areas where house prices are often too high because of holidaymakers.
Value Is EverythingDecember 22, 2024 at 20:09 #1716083“We didn’t go to war to defy a democratic vote. We tried to get another referendum based on fact and not lies and misinformation”.
—————————————–To be honest Moe’, I voted Remain and signed that petition for another referendum soon afterwards, but it wasn’t long before I felt ashamed of doing so. It was an undemocratic thing to do… And there were “lies and misinformation” on BOTH sides.
Europe is in just as bad a situation financially as us, in some places worse… And yet Osbourne and Co said we’d be doing a lot worse than Europe. Yes, we are struggling, but Germany and France’s current situation indicates we would be struggling too if still in the EU. London is still Europe’s biggest financial centre, despite the Remain campaign saying it would melt into obscurity by now… etc etc.
After a referendum there should be quite a long time for whoever won to prove itself right (or wrong) before having another one.
Some even say we shouldn’t have had a referendum in the first place. That would’ve meant the Uk population not having any say on something that has changed enormously since it was introduced as just a “Common Market” in the 1970’s. How long should we have gone before asking again? 50 years? 100?
Value Is EverythingDecember 22, 2024 at 20:48 #1716085Well, we’ve had 7 or so years and I don’t see us being better off. Where are all of the trade deals that we would get quickly? Have Turkey joined the EU? Is there a European army? Why haven’t energy bills come down? ( didn’t help that the Conservatives got rid of our gas storage facilities’) Our farmers have been shafted by deals with Australia and New Zealand. What’s happened to our fishing industry; the one that was a huge talking point during the referendum campaign even though it contributed a mere fraction to our economy?
December 22, 2024 at 21:00 #1716087Another Brexit benefit
‘Until Brexit the UK government was signed up to the water framework directive, which required countries to make sure all their waters achieved “good” chemical and ecological status by 2027 at the latest. The UK government later reduced the target to 75% of waterways reaching the single test of good ecological status by 2027 at the latest. The target for the majority of waterways to achieve good status in both chemical and ecological tests has now been pushed back to 2063, according to the documents.By 2027, only 4% of waters are currently on track to be in good overall condition.’
December 23, 2024 at 12:22 #1716128Did you not see the Olympic Games, how France’s rivers are in the same condition?
I remember my old History teacher Mr Roughead in the early 80’s telling me “the sewage system has Victorian drains and they’ll soon need a massive overhaul”. 40 years later (including through some Labour governments) and many are still Victorian.
Value Is EverythingDecember 23, 2024 at 12:24 #1716129For sure Britain is not in a better economic situation with Brexit. But with France and Germany as they are now, it can hardly be said we’d be in a better situation if we were still in the EU.
Value Is EverythingDecember 23, 2024 at 14:38 #1716142But our economy took a massive hit because of Brexit. By the way, unlike a lot of people that were in the people’s vote groups I belonged to that are now trying to pressurise the government to rejoin the EU, as far asI’m concerned that boat has flown and we have to make the most of where we are now. It’s left me politically as a Billy no mates! (story of my life really…)
December 23, 2024 at 18:26 #1716163This lot have really screwed the economy this time; nowt to do with ‘outside’ pressures, nowt to do with the last government.
And the ‘solution’?
Rumours are rife they’ll plump for more tax rises.
Rachel from Accounts and the clueless one, who resides only a few miles from moi, need to go on a work experience placement with some real economists, me thinks.Paul Johnson, IFS today: “the Chancellor may have to put up taxes again next autumn as a result (of the flatlined economy)”.
And Johnson aint no Right winger; he once worked with Gordon Brown when he was in power.
Mess, what a mess.
Completely clueless government. - AuthorPosts
