Without wishing to criticise an inexperienced jockey, I think that I have seen the most dangerous, irresponsible and unsafe piece of riding ever tonight in the 8.50 at Killarney.
As it involves one of the O’Brien family I have no doubt that the industry and the sycophantic press will close ranks.
That young lady should be banned for a massive amount of time , as she not only caused a massive risk to her mount, but also to the poor horse and jockey on her inside.
Whip hand on the right also.
That could have led to carnage.
Surely there is a duty of care to ensure that these people have a modicum of skill.July 13, 2015 at 23:14 #1134388You’re being extremely harsh and hyperbolic I think Coggy. Sabrina O’Brien definitely should have switched her whip hand and taken some better corrective measures, but her horse had cocked its jaw and probably couldn’t have been switched back. I’m not being sycophantic or sympathising because she’s an O’Brien at all – genuinely think that was a difficult situation for any jockey to deal with, let alone an amateur. As we see in racing all the time, jockeys are usually helpless when a horse starts veering that violently. With your weight shifting so suddenly, it’s hard to do anything but hold on.
It’s worth noting that the runner-up (ridden by the vastly experienced and stylish Mr RP Quinlan) almost did the exact same to the winner a furlong later. That could have been an accident too.
Maybe there was something in the in-field spooking the horses. Since both horses dived left towards the rails despite there being no run-off areas to the left, you’ve got to suspect there was something out of shot to the right that was giving them the fantods.
